“Majority of games” from Xbox coming to PS5, suggests industry expert

Christopher Dring, head of the well respected GamesIndustry.biz, has returned from GDC 2024 and explained what he heard at the event. He begins by stating that although not in best of shape, the games industry as a whole was fairly optimistic about the coming years.
He then begins to talk about Xbox and explains that Microsoft’s poor performance in Europe is making third party publishers wonder if they should even make Xbox versions of games. “The phrase one major company who released a big game last year said [was], ‘I don’t know why we bothered supporting it.” He also mentions that making both an X and S version of game may be a factor.
“With Xbox putting some of the games on PS5—from what I understand the majority of them will be coming across at some point, assuming it progresses as Xbox believes it probably will—I think Xbox is in real trouble as a hardware manufacturer, and that was the thing that came out of GDC for me,” he adds.
Microsoft have stated that none of their big games such as Starfield and Indiana Jones will be released on PlayStation 5, although this seems to go against a more recent comment from Phil Spencer who stated “I don’t think we should as an industry ever rule out a game going to any other platform.”
The fate of Starfield and others lies solely with Game Pass, if Microsoft can sell enough subscriptions to fund games that large, as well as pay for all the other games on the service, then they will stay exclusive. If they can’t then Microsoft will either have to start taking big financial hits, or release the games on rival formats.
Microsoft have said they are planning for the next generation of Xbox which will have ground-breaking new hardware.
