The Sea of Thieves PS5 version will be a crucial test for other former Xbox exclusives coming to rival platforms, according to outlet The Verge.
Some days ago, it was reported that Microsoft's executive in charge of new AI initiatives, backward compatibility, and cloud gaming, Kareem Choudhry, would be leaving the company. Choudhry's departure comes among other big strategy changes at Microsoft, including a change that involves some older Xbox console exclusives coming to the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 5. While Xbox's Phil Spencer said that, aside from the current four titles coming to rival platforms, no other exclusives are currently being announced, the Xbox head didn't rule out other games going multi-platform either. "I don't think we should as an industry ever rule out a game going to any other platform. We're focused on these four games and learning from the experience", Spencer said.

"Sources familiar with Microsoft’s plans tell me that the company continues to evaluate other Xbox-exclusive games coming to PS5", the article from The Verge reads. "I understand Sea of Thieves will be a key test for whether other games might make their way to PS5 or Nintendo Switch."

As we head deeper into 2024, the traditional “E3” season (of course, E3 is dead now, but you catch my drift) for gaming announcements and showcases is coming up fast. In recent days we’ve begun to hear some murmurings about Microsoft’s big 2024 showcase, with Gears 6 reportedly being there, and now a few more potential details may have filtered out.
Microsoft confirmed earlier this year that its annual Xbox Games Showcase would be returning in June, and though a specific date for the event has yet to be officially announced, it seems one has been set internally within the company.
The early months of 2024 have seen Microsoft stepping up its efforts to bring its first-party Xbox titles to audiences on rival platforms, with Hi-Fi Rush having released for PS5 and Obsidian duo Pentiment and Grounded both having launched for PS5 and Switch. Sea of Thieves arrives for PS5 later this month, and though Microsoft hasn’t officially announced further plans to bring any other of its games to rival consoles beyond that, reports continue to insist that there’s more stuff in the pipeline.
Hi-Fi Rush was recently released on PlayStation 5, where an analysis identified the game to be running slightly better than on Xbox. Despite being a first-party Xbox title, Hi-Fi Rush continues a trend of such releases either performing worse or lacking features on Xbox Series X when compared to the PS5 launch.
