Li Mei, Tanya, Omni-Man, and Homelander will draw blood in Mortal Kombat 1

The fighting game genre has many notable franchises. One of the earliest to earn iconic status is Mortal Kombat. It punched its way onto the arcade scene in 1992 and quickly found its way to the home console market, wowing players with at-the-time realistic visuals and controversial over–the–top gore. That controversial content ushered in the now-industry standard ratings system, but Mortal Kombat’s legacy has been defined by much more than that. For over 11 mainline installments, the series built gameplay innovations and an ever-growing roster atop its core 1-on-1 fighting system.

Mortal Kombat fans are waiting on the next major installment to land in the marketplace later this year. However, we’re still in the dark if you’re itching to see the entire roster. But fortunately, NetherRealm Studios has been teasing fans with new character reveals over a series of teasers and trailers. Today, we’re finding out that the roster should contain a total of 24 fighters, according to a new report from Temple of Geek that surfaced online. This publication managed to speak with Dominic Cianciolo, the story director behind the upcoming game at SDCC. 

Mortal Kombat 1, a new start for the long-running and ultra-violent fighting game franchise is set to release in only a few months’ time. It’s a big day for Mortal Kombat 1’s confirmed characters, with six new additions officially unveiled as part of the foray’s first Fighter Pack. And if you’re into guest characters, then you have a trio of unexpected (but previously rumoured) arrivals to look forward to: Peacemaker, Homelander, and Omni-Man. Even though this author’s personally not intimately familiar with these characters, the models are very good.

A trio of Mortal Kombat 1 fighters have been revealed in an action-packed trailer, with Baraka, Tanya, and the oft-overlooked Li Mei all joining the lineup. Fans will obviously be familiar with Baraka, while Tanya was last seen in Mortal Kombat X. But it’s Li Mei who will require a better memory: she was last playable in Mortal Kombat: Armageddon on the PS2!

NetherRealm’s Mortal Kombat franchise will be receiving a reboot with the upcoming title, Mortal Kombat 1. It is set to hit shelves on September 19 on PC and current-gen consoles, and in the lead-up, some of the characters and gameplay have been revealed.

Mortal Kombat 1 is lining up quite the star-studded kast for its DLC, with JK Simmons set to reprise his role as Omni-Man from animated series Invincible. Simmons’ on-screen depiction of the komic-book character joins John Cena’s DC Komics anti-hero Peacemaker and Antony Starr as The Boys’ Homelander, alongside some returning Mortal Kombat faces, in the fighting game’s komic-heavy Kombat Pack.
