Mario fans on PC unite as a modder has released a brand-new Super Mario 64 PC mod that adds a random level generator to the game.
Created by modder 'TwilightPB', the 'Infinite Mario 64' mod allows players to play Nintendo's 1996 classic 'forever'. As expected, the mod adds infinite random levels to Mario 64, and an early version of the mod has been made available for download for free.
In order to use this mod, those interested will need to own a copy of Mario 64 on the Nintendo 64 and get an unmodified copy of the Super Mario 64 NTSC ROM. Installation instructions on how to get this mod working can be found here. It's a really interesting mod that will surely be appreciated by Mario fans. A clip and video of the mod can be found below:
Released in 1996 for the Nintendo 64, Mario 64 was the first 3D entry in Nintendo's popular Mario franchise. Many consider the game to be one of the most influential and best games ever created. The game was recently re-released as part of the limited Super Mario 3D All-Stars collection for the Nintendo Switch. Here's what we wrote about Mario 64 as part of that collection:
"As soon as I turned Super Mario 3D All-Stars on I started up Super Mario 64 and begun playing that one. I blinked, and I had 8 stars. I blinked again, 32. Before I knew it, I'd been completing each stage with all available stars, just blazing through the game, without the time to even stop and consider what I was looking at. Super Mario 64 is like glorious muscle memory and flow given digital life - if alchemists could bottle a feeling like this we would all be addicts. Super Mario 64 just feels natural, after starting the game you're in the first level within less than a minute, and a few minutes later you can be several stars deep if you know what you're doing. Super Mario 64, more than 20 years later, is still close to being perfect to play."

could have had far more silly and bizarre elements, according to the game's creators. The title already saw the introduction of new power-ups that could transform the player into an elephant — something that Mario's creator, Shigeru Miyamoto reportedly wasn't a fan of in the early design stages, saying it didn't look like a Mario character -, provide them with a drill to burrow into the ground or up into the ceiling, or a bubble-spewing flower to capture enemies.
