OnePlus announced its first folding smartphone today, the OnePlus Open. This dual-screened device sports a purposeful design, excellent displays, and a new way to multitask that makes it a powerful productivity partner.
It competes well with the Google Pixel Fold and the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 (both $1,799). Preorders start Oct. 19 and retail availability is planned for Oct. 26. And though OnePlus set the retail price of the phone at $1,699.99, the company has a program in place to help reduce the cost. Here's how it works.
To start, OnePlus is offering a basic trade-in deal. If you buy the phone from OnePlus.com, you will receive a minimum trade-in credit of $200 by sending in any phone in any condition. OnePlus verified that this means literally any old cell phone, including non-working devices from 20 years ago. And yes, it can be completely broken and totally dead. In other words, that crummy, dirty block of plastic you've had at the bottom of a drawer since 2005 is worth $200. Find it!
The company says $200 is the minimum trade-in value. Newer phones that have more worth will net larger trade-in values of up to $1,000 depending on the device. For example, if you trade in a new Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max, OnePlus will give you $1,000 for it.
You might think this is a limited promotion but you'd be wrong. This offer is available in perpetuity throughout the product's lifecycle. If you decide to buy the phone six or 12 months from now, the trade-in deal will still be in place. To put it another way, no one should pay more than $1,499.99 for the OnePlus Open. All trade-ins will be recycled or donated via OnePlus' partnership with The Wireless Alliance.
OnePlus is also offering some deals to those who buy the phone. If you preorder from OnePlus' website, you'll get a free, limited-edition pair of OnePlus Buds Pro 2 earphones (normally $189.99). The company is giving away up to 5,000 numbered earphones in white. Moreover, you can get 24 months of zero-percent financing, three months of YouTube Premium, and six months of a Google One 100GB membership for cloud storage.
The same set of offers is available once general sales kick off on Oct. 26, though the headphone offer is valid only while supplies last.
Amazon has some offers, too. During the preorder period and once general availability starts, you can get a $200 Amazon gift card, 12 months of zero-percent financing, three months of YouTube Premium, and six months of Google One 100GB. You don't get the free earphones.
OnePlus is also selling the phone via Best Buy, but the brick-and-mortar retailer hasn't rolled out any preorder or launch incentives yet.
While the preorder deals are a nice bonus, the takeaway here is that the OnePlus Open should

Black Friday is still a few weeks away, but several retailers have already begun rolling out some excellent deals worth checking out this weekend. For example, our top deal this weekend is the inaugural discount on the Asus ROG Ally, knocking $80 off the speedy handheld PC at Best Buy. Some other noteworthy deals include a pair of Humble bundles, a sizeable discount on the Xbox Elite Series 2 controller, and some personal favorites from my board game library.
Update: Pulse Explore wireless earbuds, Pulse Elite wireless headset, and additional PlayStation Link USB adapters will be available to pre-order starting Friday, November 24th. Preorders will be available through PlayStation Authorized Dealers and Sony Centres in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines, and Vietnam.
Generative artificial intelligence has become a major discussion point in 2023, but we generally hear about its consumer-focused or business-focused applications. However, generative AI is not just limited to this space as it has made a strong impact in academics and research fields as well. A new report has highlighted that a group of researchers have developed an AI tool that can potentially predict deadly viruses before they can appear. This model can be crucial in predicting COVID-19-like pandemic situations ahead of time, and enable governments and the healthcare industry to be better prepared.
Starfield contributed to the single most successful day in Xbox Game Pass's history.
There are many misconceptions about video game development that continue to this day despite decades of proof to the contrary. One of them is that video game developers rarely “stress about their titles” unless they’re in “crunch mode” or simply unsure how people will receive the game. The fact is that game developers stress about their titles all the time for various reasons, both internal and external. The bigger the game, the more the stress piles in. Starfield is an excellent example of this. Numerous people, from Todd Howard to others at Bethesda, have noted the stresses of working on the game and attempting to make it great.
Long-time Bethesda Game Studios designer Bruce Nesmith is featured in the latest MinnMax interview, discussing topics from The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall to Starfield.
Bethesda's former design director thinks The Elder Scrolls 6 will keep The Elder Scroll 5: Skyrim's levelling up and progression system.
The Elder Scrolls 6, as nebulous as it might feel, is eventually coming, and Bethesda’s former design director has shared some tidbits on what could be carried over from previous games, including Skyrim’s progression and magic systems.
One of the resources that you’ll need to help you survive as you’re exploring in The Forest is water. While there are plenty of places to find water, most of it isn’t safe enough for drinking.
Final Fantasy XIV’s achievements are no joke, as proved by the 10 years it took the first player to earn every achievement in the MMO. But director and producer Naoki Yoshida is up for making even more difficult achievements, if the achievement-hunting pro is game for the challenge.
The Apple Vision Pro launch is said to happen in early 2024, but it will not be easy for customers to acquire one as the device is said to be available through an appointment system only. Also, the company has been extremely mum on the product, which only means that the average person does not know what they will be getting for their hard-earned $3,499, and that may be why Apple has selected a few retail employees to undergo a secret training event prior to the release of the AR headset.
