Hideo Kojima’s Death Stranding live-action movie adaptation is really happening, and now A24, the studio behind Everything Everywhere All at Once, Uncut Gems, and Hereditary, is involved. Kojima Productions and A24 announced their collaboration on Thursday, offering new details about their Death Stranding movie and further reinforcing that, yeah, this this is actually happening.
Death Stranding, the movie, will “delve into the mysteries surrounding the apocalyptic event called the ‘Death Stranding,’ which blurred the lines between life and death, and brought forth nightmarish creatures into a world on the brink of collapse,” according to A24.
As previously noted, the live-action movie adaptation of Death Stranding will “introduce new elements and characters within the Death Stranding universe.” According to Kojima, it won’t just be a one-to-one adaptation of the 2019 video game.
“There are a lot of ‘game adaptation films’ out there but what we are creating is not just a direct translation of the game,” Kojima said in a statement. “The intention is that our audience will not only be fans of the games, but our film will be for anyone who loves cinema. We are creating a Death Stranding universe that has never been seen before, achievable only through the medium of film, it will be born.”
Further cementing that Kojima’s movie will actually happen? An A24 Death Stranding T-shirt, which is already sold out.
Death Stranding’s cinematic adaptation will be co-produced by Barbarian executive producer Alex Lebovici and Kojima himself. There is currently no director, writer, or plot synopsis available; it’s unclear whether the game’s talent, including Norman Reedus, Mads Mikkelsen, Léa Seydoux, Lindsay Wagner, and Margaret Qualley, would reprise their roles in live-action.
Kojima Productions is currently heads down on Death Stranding 2, which will bring back Reedus, Seydoux, and Troy Baker for the still-mysterious sequel. Kojima and crew are also working on a new horror game called OD, tapping writer-director Jordan Peele (Get Out, Nope) and other “talented storytellers” for the project.
Up next for A24 is Jonathan Glazer’s Holocaust film The Zone of Interest, wrestling tragedy biopic The Iron Claw, and Alex Garland’s political action-thriller Civil War.

Death Stranding is coming to the big screen, thanks to a partnership between indie film studio A24 and game developer Kojima Productions. The announcement comes ahead of the Hideo Kojima-helmed studio's 8th anniversary. The film adaptation will focus on the mysteries surrounding the titular apocalyptic event that brought the nightmarish creatures called BT into the living world, blurring the lines between the dead and the living through a portal. Instead of a direct translation of the divisive 2019 video game, the film will serve as a companion piece that further expands the solitary universe. The world of Death Stranding is also set to return in DS2, a sequel announced at last year's The Game Awards.
