A hidden detail has hinted at the continuation of one of the creepier sides to lore. While on the surface, the franchise is full of colorful, family-friendly fare as kids embark upon adventures to become Pokémon trainers, the series has always had its more sinister supernatural elements, with players encountering various specters upon their journeys.
Redditor Ckmarv shared a video to the r/PokemonScarletViolet subreddit that showed a portrait in the Club room blinking, asking if it could be s version of the "".
Others on the thread such as martinkem_ suggested this could be a texture error, but this was quickly debunked by headphonesnotstirred, who stated that "", meaning the blinking is completely intentional and further supporting Ckmarv's original theory.
already has some of the darkest storytelling in the series, with revealing stories surrounding murder and theft, and the backstory to the Bramblin depicting it as a soul unable to move on after death, eventually being blown into dried grass by the wind to become a Pokémon.
Pokémon trainers have had several encounters with ghosts over the years, with the Lumiose City Ghost that appeared in the franchise's gen 6th games with and. When entering the second floor of a Fighting Dojo on North Boulevard, the game's music abruptly stops, the lights flicker, and the spectral form of a woman appears behind the player, uttering the words «No, you're not the one...» before floating off-screen. A ghost girl also appeared behind the Ghost-type specialist Phoebe in and
Theories suggest that the Luminose City Ghost is that of a woman in Mt. Pyre, in the other gen 6 games, and, who says a very similar line and shares the same NPC model.
In the gen 4 games,, ,,, and, the ghosts of a little girl and a butler appear when exploring the Old Chateau in Eterna Forest, and in gen 5's and, the spirit of a young girl will be standing on Marvelous Bridge, and will disappear if the player walks towards her. There was also a "" character who was prominent in the 90th episode of, "", which was the 556th episode of the anime. While in the games, many of these specters are shrouded in mystery, the ghost girl present in the anime is an evil spirit that tries to capture humans and bring them to the spirit world.
With the many ghostly appearances over various generations, it would hardly be surprising if the blinking portrait in was yet another supernatural encounter. If so, it is certainly a more subtle one compared to encounters in other games, suggesting that there may be more of a mystery left to uncover.
