Spoilers for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth from the fourth paragraph onwards.
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is out now, finally letting us experience the next chapter in the remake series. With Final Fantasy 7 Remake already making changes to the story of the original game, many will be wondering how Rebirth shakes it up even further - particularly with how it handles that death.
Back in the day, Aerith was killed off relatively early on in Final Fantasy 7, at the end of the first disc. Since Remake made changes to the original story, many fans had wondered if this would continue with Rebirth, perhaps swapping Aerith out with another character. Tifa was a popular guess, something that Square Enix seemed to play into in the trailers.
But now, we know exactly how Rebirth and the next game in the series will handle that pivotal Aerith scene. From this, we can get a better idea of how faithful the final game in the trilogy will be to the originals too, since this moment will tie into the next sequel, whenever we get it.
Alright, this is your final warning. Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth spoiler time. In 3, 2, 1...
Sorry, Aeirth fans - she still kicks the bucket in Rebirth. Her death isn't as straightforward as it was in the original Final Fantasy 7 at least, what with all the alternate universe shenanigans this time around, but alas, Sephiroth still kills Aerith in the game. That does mean that Tifa, Barret, and anyone else we thought would take her place are safe. For now. Who knows what Square Enix has planned for them further down the line?
One thing that was noted by one of my colleagues who has blasted through Rebirth already is that this might not be the end for Aerith. Without getting into specific details, it seems like Cloud will still be able to communicate with her, perhaps giving her a role in the next game, whatever it ends up being called. But considering it was a four-year wait between Rebirth and Remake (admittedly broken up by Intergrade and Reunion), we shouldn't expect any news on the next instalment anytime soon.
If you want to see how it all goes down for yourself, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is out now. It launched on February 29 and is available exclusively for PlayStation 5. A port for PC is expected sometime after launch, just as we saw with Final Fantasy 7 Remake.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is a beautiful but bloated tribute to the original game, and part of that excess includes a large cast of characters that draws upon the larger world of Final Fantasy 7 media. At this point, it’s getting to be a bit like the Marvel Cinematic Universe, because Rebirth adds several characters who never appeared in the original, but did in some of the spinoffs. If you’ve just played either the original Final Fantasy 7 or Final Fantasy 7 Remake, then Rebirth can get confusing at points, since some characters from other games just show up out of the blue.
What if moogles looked like koala bears... with human teeth? I'm so glad you asked, because Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth gives us the answer. Horrifying. They would look horrifying.
Players have been gushing about Final Fantasy VII Rebirth since its launch last week, and there’s a good reason for that: the game is incredible by all meaningful accounts. Just as important, the title expanded upon the game’s lore, world, and more to ensure that gamers had the best experience within it. Remember, the original “remake” title was set entirely within Midgar, with the team at Avalanche only getting out of the city after a clash with Sephiroth. However, while the Square Enix team did make the world vast, they ensured that there was still plenty to explore within the next entry, which will finish the story.
After 2023’s onslaught of great games and 2024’s strong start, I’m not sure how anyone has room left in their backlog. But if you’re open to welcoming more discs into your life, you may want to pay attention to the sale on pre-owned games happening now at GameStop.
