Barbie has now made $1 billion at the box office – and there's no sequel on the horizon. Neither writer-director Greta Gerwig nor her co-writer (and real-life partner) Noah Baumbach has a contract for Barbie 2, but that doesn't mean the studio hasn't tried to convince Gerwig.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, though, Warner Bros. tried to get the ball rolling a few months prior to the movie's release – but Gerwig's team turned them down and wanted to wait until the film hit the big screen.
This was an astute decision on the part of her agents, as Barbie recently crossed the $1 billion mark at the global box office – making Gerwig the first-ever female director to cross that threshold. Barbie is now the second-highest-grossing movie of the year, too, with only The Super Mario Bros. Movie ahead of it.
The movie stars Margot Robbie as the titular doll (along with an ensemble cast of other, different Barbies, played by Issa Rae, Hari Nef, Alexandra Shipp, Emma Mackey, and more) and Ryan Gosling as Ken. When Barbie starts to experience feelings of existential dread in her otherwise pink and plastic life, she sets out on a mission to the real world to try and return everything to normal – but things don't quite go to plan when the real world starts to infiltrate Barbie Land.
Barbie is out now in cinemas. For more on the movie, check out the rest of our coverage:

They Cloned Tyrone, the directorial debut of writer-director Juel Taylor starring John Boyega, Teyonah Parris, and Jamie Foxx, has made its mark this summer as not only one of the best new movies on Netflix, but one of the best new releases of the year. The sci-fi/comedy/mystery genre mashup follows a trio of oddball characters: Fontaine, a stoic and brusque drug dealer (Boyega); Yo-Yo, a savvy sex worker with dreams of escaping her hometown (Parris); and Slick Charles, a hilarious pimp (Foxx). They stumble upon a hidden government research facility below their neighborhood devoted to a variety of nefarious projects. With the combined power of their respective talents and the help of their community, the group takes on the forces aligned against them in order to expose the truth and take charge of their own destinies.
Another weekend means we're back with another batch of streaming recommendations – and it's been a bumper week of new releases.
It seems ironic that after months of fuss over Oppenheimer’s too-brief (and eventually extended) window in IMAX theaters, and the question of who was going to get to see it in “true” IMAX and who would have to settle for various forms of “LieMAX,” the other half of the Barbenheimer pairing is now sliding in to take over where Oppenheimer left off. Warner Bros. announced Thursday that Greta Gerwig’s Barbie will play in IMAX theaters for one week starting on Sept. 22 — now with “additional, never-before-seen post-credit footage.”
Existing in the intersection of puzzle game, platformer and level editor, It’s A Wrap! casts you as the director of a low-budget, probably bad Hollywood flick that’s surely about to be sued for workplace injury claims. Essentially, you rejig platforms and background props and obstacles in the level (as the director) and then you zoom in for some dangerous side-scrolling goodness (as the actor). Oh, and did I mention that it’s out now? Shadow-drop!
