It can be nice to have a TV show in your rotation that you know isn’t ending any time soon. But sometimes, you want something with an end point in mind from its creators. Freed from the pressures of renewal and cancellation, limited series can give us some of the best storytelling the medium of television has to offer.
Golden Axe animated series announced by Comedy Central

Sega’s classic arcade title Golden Axe will be heading to the small screen in the shape of an animated television series for Comedy Central. Star Trek: Lower Decks Mike McMahan and American Dad’s Joe Chandler are creating the series so you can assume that it will probably focus more on zingy one liners rather than smashing seven bells out of Death Adder.
Ten episodes have been ordered and it will be mixing things up with characters from the first and third Golden Axe games as well a brand new character, Hampton Squib. Here’s the official description from the press release:
Golden Axe: From the time when box cover art had just a passing resemblance to the game inside.
“Matthew Rhys (The Americans, Perry Mason) will play Gilius Thunderhead, a grumpy battle dwarf with exceptionally poor hygiene and a chip on his shoulder. Danny Pudi (Mythic Quest, Community) as Hampton Squib, a naive, inexperienced first time adventurer who has dreamt of questing his entire life. He hopes his can-do attitude can make up for his inability to actually do stuff. Lisa Gilroy (Jury Duty, Interior Chinatown) as Tyris Flare, a fearsome battle sorceress, deadly in a fight and even deadlier with her sharp wit. Liam McIntyre (Spartacus, The Flash) as Ax Battler, a barbarian warrior with a strict code of honor and sweet golden retriever demeanor. His brawn outweighs his brains, but his heart outweighs his brawn. Carl Tart (Grand Crew, Star Trek: Lower Decks) as Chronos ‘Evil’ Lait, originally from Golden Axe III, is a 100% badass humanoid panther. At least that’s how Chronos describes himself. In reality he’s uncomfortably cheesy and can’t read a room. Fans can anticipate plenty of exciting cameos from the world of Golden Axe”
Sega teased a brand new Golden Axe game at The Game Awards 2023 along with new games for Jet Set Radio, Crazy Taxi, Shinobi, and Streets of Rage. You can see a very brief clip in the video below.

Kena: Bridge of Spirits, the acclaimed action-adventure title that launched exclusively on PC and PlayStation consoles in 2021, seems to be finally making its way to Xbox. While there's been no official announcement from developers Ember Lab or Microsoft, the game has seemingly been rated by the Entertainment Software Rating Board, or ESRB, in the US for Xbox Series consoles. Star Trek: Lower Decks’ creator is turning Sega’s Golden Axe into an animated comedy
Sega’s arcade hack-and-slash beat-’em-up Golden Axe is being adapted for television. In something of an unexpected twist, that TV series will be an animated comedy. Mike McMahan (Star Trek: Lower Decks, Solar Opposites) and Joe Chandler (American Dad!) will co-write the first episode and executive produce the 10-episode series, Comedy Central announced Wednesday. The announcement came two days after Paramount revealed that season 5 of Lower Decks would be the series’ final installment.
