From Software has acquired full rights to the Elden Ring trademark from Bandai Namco.
According to a US Patent and Trademark Office assignment document, ownership of the trademark switched between the companies in March 2023, about 13 months after the blockbuster game’s release.
“Assignor [Bandai Namco] hereby assigns to assignee [From Software] all right, title and interest in and to the trademark, together with the goodwill of the business symbolised by the trademark and the identified registration therefor, and with all claims arising out of or relating to the use of ownership of the trademark,” it reads.
Elden Ring was released in February 2022 and sold 20 million copies within its first year, according to From Software and Bandai Namco.
While developer From Software also published Elden Ring in its native Japan, fellow Japanese company Bandai Namco published the game internationally.
In August 2022, From Software owner Kadokawa Corporation announced plans to sell shares to Sony and Tencent which would result in the pair owning a combined 30% of From Software.
It said the move would enhance From Software’s development capabilities and potentially help it to publish its own games globally.
“Through the implementation of the fund procurement, FromSoftware will aim to proactively invest in development of more powerful game IP for itself to strengthen FromSoftware’s development capabilities and will seek to establish a framework that allows the expansion of the scope of its own publishing in the significantly growing global market,” it said.
An Elden Ring expansion, Shadow of the Erdtree, was announced three days after the title’s first anniversary, although few details about the DLC have been confirmed in the year since.
“We are currently working hard on the development of DLC for Elden Ring but we have not announced a release date at this time,” Kadokawa said in a quarterly earnings reports published this month.
It was also reported this month that Tencent is developing a mobile version of Elden Ring.

Let Me Solo Her, the legendary Elden Ring player who has helped countless others to defeat the hardest boss in the game, might finally move on from his crusade upon the release of the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC. This much anticipated expansion, which is expected to introduce even more tough opponents, will drop in mid-2024.
DLC finally has a release date and received a new trailer alongside the announcement. In true FromSoftware fashion, there are a lot of hidden details and new enemies in the trailer. But that also means there's plenty of room for speculation while waiting for the DLC to fully release.
Inspired by the Shadow of the Erdtree gameplay reveal trailer, a talented Elden Ring fan completes an impressive painting based on the setting of the new DLC expansion, the Land of Shadow. The Elden Ring painting depicts the Erdtree and the mythical shadow covering the new region that players will soon explore this June.
FromSoftware is changing its approach to level design with Elden Ring's Shadow of the Erdtree DLC.
As one of the best-reviewed games of all time and with more than 23 million copies shipped worldwide, Elden Ring has been an enormous success for developer FromSoftware, which means it’s only natural to assume that the studio isn’t going to be done with this IP anytime soon in the near future. However, according to FromSoftware boss and Elden Ring director Hidetaka Miyazaki, currently, there are no plans in place for a second expansion following the June release of Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree, nor for a full-fledged sequel.
With Shadow of the Erdtree serving as the first paid expansion for Elden Ring (and FromSoftware’s largest yet), many assume it will provide a tougher challenge. It’s a pattern with the developer’s previous expansions, as seen in Dark Souls 3: The Ringed City, Bloodborne: The Old Hunters.
