Fortnite Chapter 5, Season 2's launch has been delayed by another five hours due to server maintenance, after having previously been pushed back by eight hours earlier in the day.
We might just have had one of the most memorable seasons in Fortnite history with Chapter 5, Season 1 (I mean, who could say no to Peter Griffin?), but it's time to move on to new things with the long-awaited release of Chapter 5, Season 2, which is themed after Greek mythology and nicknamed Myths and Mortals.
Although Fortnite's latest season was supposed to go live at around 2pm UK time, that isn't what ended up happening. Shortly before everyone expected the server maintenance to end and the season to go live, Epic announced that it was pushing back the update by eight hours, which is a pretty significant delay.
That was bad enough, but just as we were getting closer to the new time for the season launch, reliable Fortnite insider HYPEX has discovered that the update is going to be delayed by another five hours. That means that the season launch has been pushed back a total of 13 hours, which is pretty unprecedented for the arrival of a new Fortnite update.
In fact, as pointed out by HYPEX, this is the second-longest non-event downtime in Fortnite history, just falling short of when Fortnite went down for 17 hours due to the "Rust Bucket Incident" in 2018. It's not clear what's causing such a massive delay, but considering there were already waiting times to get in before the update was supposed to go live, it's going to be quite a struggle to get in.
In fairness to Epic, it did warn players earlier in the day that the delay was going to be "at least" eight hours, so it's not like it was lying to us or anything.
Of course, most Fortnite season launches have some kind of waiting time or queue for players to suffer through, but I can't remember a time when a new season has been delayed by quite so much time. While US players can still say that they started Chapter 5, Season 2 today, anyone in the UK who is desperate to try out the new flying mechanics is likely going to have to wait until tomorrow.
