Nintendo has cracked down on the first Pokemon mod for Palworld. The copyright-infringing mod that adds both Pokemon creatures and characters to Palworld was first teased by its creator yesterday, January 22.
Given how PocketPair's newest title has seemingly been envisioned as a parody of Pokemon, unofficial community content that adds actual pocket monsters to the hit survival game was only a question of time. But that time arrived even earlier than many had expected, with Australian YouTuber ToastedShoes taking mere days to put together a prototype mod that replaced Palworld's Pals with Pokemon.
Nintendo wasted no time in cracking down on ToastedShoes' initial teaser of the mod, which has already been removed from Twitter following a DMCA takedown notice, as per the YouTuber's own admission. Yet that turn of events did not discourage ToastedShoes from showcasing his work. On the contrary, the content creator just made good on his promise to post an extensive video of the mod. But the 16-minute clip that emerged on his YouTube channel on January 23 is likely going to get taken down soon as well.
The very act of posting the video brought ToastedShoes closer to the possibility of having his account banned. According to YouTube's terms of use, receiving three copyright strikes subjects one's channel to termination and prohibits them from creating new channels. That fact was not lost on many of the content creator's followers, who took to his latest video's comment section to praise ToastedShoes for his bravery. «The hero we don't deserve,» wrote one YouTube user, while another one proclaimed that «history will remember» ToastedShoes for being so daring at the height of the Palworld vs Pokemon controversy.
Despite being unbothered by the idea of risking his YouTube account with copyright-infringing content, the Australian internet personality doesn't appear keen to keep poking the Nintendo bear using different means. Specifically, ToastedShoes has just taken to Twitter to state that his mod won't be releasing anytime soon, if ever. Elaborating on that point, the YouTuber said he wants to «tread lightly» due to the swift and decisive manner in which Nintendo reacted to his initial Twitter post teasing the Palworld Pokemon mod.
The game itself has so far avoided legal issues with Nintendo and other Pokemon IP stakeholders. But whether that remains the case moving forward remains to be seen. After all, even The Pokemon Company's ex-Chief Legal Officer has recently described Palworld as «ripoff nonsense» that he used to deal with on a daily basis, albeit without outright stating the game offers grounds for a copyright infringement lawsuit.
Pocket Pair's Palworld is a creature-collection game set in an open-world.

Setting up a base is one of the very first things you’ll do when you’re getting started in Palworld. You’ll be building up your base throughout the game, so getting your location and layout right will save you plenty of headaches in the long run - here’s what we wish we knew starting out!
This week on the Eurogamer Newscast, we discuss today's statement from The Pokémon Company that confirms it will investigate Palworld for possible intellectual property infringement.
Nexus Mods — one of the biggest modding sites on the internet — has confirmed it won't be hosting Pokémon-themed Palworld mods, saying doing so would «almost certainly… put us at risk of legal action» given Nintendo's history of litigiousness.
The dream continues for independent Japanese developer Pocketpair as Palworld has now sold over seven million units in just five days since its early access launch. The open world survival crafting game with monster collection mechanics had sold one million in eight hours, two in twenty-four, three in forty, five million in three days, and six in four days. What's even more impressive is that, according to Geoff Keighley, these sales are for the Steam version alone. They do not account for sales on the Microsoft Store via PC/Xbox, nor do they account for Game Pass player numbers.
Nintendo has now confirmed the specific date and time that online services will be shut down for 3DS and Wii U software, and there’s less than three months to go.
As soon as the Internet first got its first look at juggernaut-to-be Palworld, many began accusing it of looking a lot like, well, let’s not play that game — you know what I’m talking about.
If you’ve been on the Internet the last few days, you know that Palworld, the “Pokémon with guns” style open-world survival game, has been a smashing success selling over 6 million copies and knocking down record after record on Steam, but it’s also been controversial. Some would say the game isn’t just inspired by Pokémon, it ventures into rip-off territory, something only exacerbated by things like the recently-teased Pokémon mod, leading some to wonder how much Nintendo and The Pokémon Company are willing to put up with.
Nintendo has quite a big collection of IPs they could return and deliver a new game for. One of the franchises that had been a bit dormant as of late is Star Fox. This is a franchise that hasn’t seen a new game release since the Nintendo Wii U. However, you can point to the previously released Star Fox 2, a title that was intended to be released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. If you recall, that game did come out during the heyday of mini-console releases for Nintendo. But beyond that, we haven’t seen a new installment released. That could change here soon.
