Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth's co-director, Motomu Toriyama, has revealed that the game's side quests were inspired by the ones found in The Witcher 3, which are still held up as some of the genre's best.
While Final Fantasy 7 Remake's side quests received a fair amount of criticism from fans for feeling like they were tacked-on and lacking a lot of depth, it seems like the same won't be said of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. Ever since the game's reveal, it's been made clear that there's a much bigger focus on extra content away from the main story, and it seems that one game was a big inspiration for that.
As part of Game Informer's recent preview of Rebirth, the game's director Naoki Hamaguchi and co-director Motomu Toriyama spoke in detail about Rebirth's new focus on side quests and open-world content. It turns out that one big RPG acts as an inspiration for how they've been handled this time around - The Witcher 3.
When asked what his favourite RPG is, Hamaguchi replied "without hesitation" that it's The Witcher 3. This was then followed up by Toriyama, who revealed that the team looked to it for inspiration when crafting its side content, and treated it as a "baseline" for what it wanted to do with Rebirth.
Toriyama said, "Regarding titles like The Witcher 3, which has that open-world role-playing type element, we did some extensive research into these types of titles and looked at it as a baseline in which Rebirth should be a type of title that can stand alongside it and have the type of content that would be satisfying to its players".
If you're wondering just how much side content is going to be in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, the developers recently revealed that 100 percent completing it would take more than 100 hours.
Considering how beloved The Witcher 3 was for its side quests, this is a very positive sign for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and one that shows just how important the extra content is to the game this time around, especially when compared with the more linear and repetitive content that was on offer in Remake.
Of course, this is far from the first time that we've heard that a game's side content has been inspired by The Witcher 3, as it's held up as the industry and genre standard, even all these years later. One recent example is God of War Ragnarok, which aimed to surpass The Witcher 3 with its quests.
