The development team behind Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth has seemingly taken a side in the great Tifa-versus-Aerith debate.

A series constant, Final Fantasy's Moogle is a familiar sight to many, and along with the Chocobo, serves as a mascot of sorts for the franchise. But the busted-looking Moogle we got in the recently released Final Fantasy VII Rebirth has been rejected by a particular segment of the community, who are convinced the gritty redesign looks more like Matthew McConaughey playing a drug mule named Miguel than a fantastical portmanteau of mole and bat.
Corraled by Eurogamer, a vocal minority is calling for a return to the cuddly, classic Moogle of yesteryear, rejecting the cracked-out koala bear Square Enix ultimately decided to go with. In fact, the Japanese combination developer-publisher weighed in on the discourse as it reached a fever pitch, proclaiming: «We love all of our Moogles and will not stand for this, kupo!»
How do you feel about Square Enix's decision to depict Moogles like this in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth? Do you like this new look, or would you rather something a little less haunting? Let us know in the comments section below.
Khayl Adam is the second-best video game journalist Australia has ever produced, and his ambitions of world domination have (thus far) been curbed by the twin siren songs of strategy games and CRPGs. He has always felt an affinity for the noble dachshund, the best kind of dog.
Alright, alright, alright, kupo.
Funny these are the same four tweets EG had on their article hours before. Lazy work guys (could've at least searched for 3-4 more tweets).
Also, for a Playstation website it is weird y'all haven't covered the new Ronin trailer yet but I guess talking about a FO tv show is more important. Odd that the reddit community argument between a dev and reddit for HD2 hasn't been covered either
Honestly… I don't mind 'em. Moogles have always stayed roughly the same with minor changes, these really aren't that different. I mean why stop at FF7 Rebirth Moogles vs. FF16 Moogles? Why not compare all Moogle versions?
I like the FF XVI look better but the FF VII Rebirth design isn't that bad.
FF9 still has the best Moogles, followed by 12
I thought they looked fine until I saw a post comparing them to the weird taxidermized fox from memes — now I always laugh when I visit the moogles.
I am sorry, not trying to be disrespectful, but how little entitled bratts some members of the gaming community are. Now they are trying to dictate how the style design for a minor «character» looks? What's next? Their names on the credits? Geez ..
Sweatband moogles are to cool to care about what twitter weirdos think.
They do kind of look like a cuddly toy that was put in the wash, came out worse for wear… and then was possessed by a ghost.
FFXIV and XII have the best moogles. Kupo.
Yeah honestly

Final Fantasy 16 could make the jump to other platforms once it launches on PC, at least according to some of the game’s developers. The latest mainline Final Fantasy game launched exclusively on the PlayStation 5 last June, but Square Enix has promised a PC port at a later date. So far, there is no official word on when the PC version of Final Fantasy 16 will be released, but producer Naoki Yoshida recently told fans that it is in the end stages of development and a playable demo should be forthcoming.
Final Fantasy XIV’s director Naoko Yoshida announced the release of the game’s next major release in the funniest way possible.
Final Fantasy 16’s next paid DLC, The Rising Tide, is adding a whole bunch of new content for fans, from a new location and side quests to Leviathan and its accompanying abilities. But that’s not all, as the PlayStation Blog confirmed an increase to the level cap.
One of the big stories this year so far has been Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth’s relative underperformance in its home territory of Japan. Historically one of the region’s most popular franchises, the Square Enix sequel couldn’t even outsell fellow PS5 console exclusive Final Fantasy 16 in its first week on the market – a surprise considering its strong critical reception.
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth's director, Naoki Hamaguchi, has confirmed that the team is currently considering "further expansions" for the in-universe card game, Queen's Blood.
Shortly before launch, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth director Naoki Hamaguchi confused many fans of the series by explaining that the development team made two versions of each side quest all because of Red XIII. We didn't know why at the time, as we weren't aware of the voice change that Red XIII goes through a little ways into the game itself, first hinted at in Under Junon and then again in Costa del Sol.
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is a stellar game, and the bevy of minigames it offers has become one of its most highly praised elements. Even with nearly 30 minigames on offer, however, there’s one in particular that has proven most popular with the game’s player base by far- Queen’s Blood, which is not only an entire, in-depth card collecting and battling game in and of itself, but also comes with an entire storyline revolving around it.
Final Fantasy 14 director Naoki Yoshida, often referred to as Yoshi-P, says he regrets making the long-running MMO as stress-free as it is.
Naoki Yoshida is keen to direct another major title for Square Enix.
Lead developers who worked on Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth have described how "tough" making the sequel really was.
The second game in Square Enix's new Final Fantasy 7 trilogy, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth has been out for just over a week on PS5 — and we want to know what you make of this highly praised sequel. At the time of writing, Rebirth is one of the highest rated Final Fantasy titles ever released (according to critics), so we're super interested in seeing how it ranks in our own games database.
