A number of Sea of Thieves fans believe the latest tweet from the game’s official X account is hinting at upcoming PlayStation and Switch ports.
The message, which is based on the traditional Valentine’s Day “roses are red, violets are blue” rhyme, is being interpreted as a tease relating to rumours that Microsoft plans to bring the game to Sony and Nintendo‘s consoles.
It reads: “Rowboats are red, and sometimes they’re blue, other times they’re green, occasionally they can be white… wait, where we we going with this?”
It’s generally agreed that Xbox is associated with green, Nintendo with red and PlayStation with blue, while white is sometimes attributed to the ‘neutral’ PC format (or could be a reference to the Epic Games Store).
Numerous replies to the tweet suggest it’s a reference to recent reports that Sea of Thieves is one of a number of Xbox games that could be coming to PlayStation and Nintendo systems.
“Switch is red, PlayStation is blue, one of these platforms you are going to,” replied one X user.
“Nintendo is red, PlayStation blue, Xbox is green, please say it’s not true,” wrote another less optimistic follower.
Last month, the Nate the Hate podcast said Microsoft was planning to bring one of its “more acclaimed” first-party games to competing platforms this year.
Responding to this claim, Giant Bomb’s Jeff Grubb said Rare’s Sea of Thieves could be set to make the jump to Sony’s and Nintendo’s consoles.
“Sea of Thieves, I’ll say I’ve heard that that was one that might be coming to other platforms,” he said at the time. “When I first started hearing these rumours, I was like, this is probably about Sea of Thieves, because I’ve heard that could come to Switch and PlayStation.”
In his industry newsletter Game File, former Kotaku editor and Axios reporter Stephen Totiloalso said last month that he’d been told by a source that Microsoft has considered bringing Sea of Thieves to PlayStation, possibly for an early 2024 release.
The claims have shown no sign of sinking, and resurfaced again this week thanks to The Verge, who claimed that Hi-Fi Rush, Pentiment and Sea of Thieves are being planned for release on rival platforms.

As it lays off around 900 people across Sony's stable of studios, including cuts at Naughty Dog, Insomniac, and the entirety of now-defunct PlayStation London, PlayStation Studios is also canning multiple unannounced projects.
Microsoft first-party games Pentiment, Grounded, Hi-Fi Rush, and Sea of Thieves will soon be available on Nintendo Switch and Sony PlayStation platforms. Xbox confirmed on Wednesday that much like other popular multi-platform games like Minecraft, Call of Duty, Overwatch and Diablo, players will soon be able to access these exclusive games on their Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 consoles. This move underscores a larger trend in the gaming industry towards greater accessibility and cross-platform interoperability. By adopting this strategy, the company hopes to encourage greater inclusivity and reach a wider range of gamers.
As expected, Microsoft yesterday confirmed that four of their games are headed to rival consoles: Pentiment to PlayStations 4 & 5 and Nintendo Switch; Hi-Fi Rush to PS5; Grounded to PS4, PS5, and Switch; and Sea Of Thieves to PS5. It's nice to see barriers between systems coming down and all, and it'll likely have consequences of note to serious businessheads, but what relevance does this have for us as a PC gaming website? Well! Grounded and Sea Of Thieves will support cross-platform multiplayer, so we'll be able to play them with our consolatory chums. That's nice.
Microsoft has confirmed multiplatform release plans for four first-party titles.
In its Nintendo Direct Partner Showcase event, it was revealed that Pentiment and Grounded, two Xbox exclusive Obsidian Entertainment games, are making the leap to the Nintendo Switch. It has been a tumultuous couple of weeks for Phil Spencer and Team Xbox after speculation and concern swept over the community regarding rumors indicating that Microsoft was considering becoming a third party developer, similarly to what Sega did after the Dreamcast. The uproar eventually pushed Phil Spencer to respond and announce that not only were they listening to fan concerns, but a planned poidcast around the company's future would reveal more.
