One Google engineer is showing off a PlayStation Portal hack that allows the device to play PSP games. The PlayStation Portal is designed to be a handheld device that remotely controls the user's PS5 console, but that hasn't stopped enthusiasts from trying to expand upon the accessory's utility.
Despite limited use cases, the PlayStation Portal has garnered solid reviews and struggled to stay in stock for long at popular retailers. The eye-catching form factor has proven to be the most ergonomic method for Remote Play, a service that has been around since the PS3.
Google engineer Andy Nguyen has taken to social media to show off their hacked PlayStation Portal device running PSP emulation software PPSSPP. After «more than a month of hard work,» and help from another Google engineer, Calle Svensson, Nguyen's PlayStation Portal can play PSP titles natively. The image Nguyen shared shows the Portal running the acclaimed PSP title Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories.
Thanks in large part to PlayStation Plus' Premium tier, subscribers can already play PSP games on their stock PlayStation Portal. That being said, this limited selection of curated PSP titles available is only playable via streaming through Remote Play. Hacking the PlayStation Portal to run PSP emulation software natively on the device means no internet connection is required. Not to mention, this opens up the Portal to play the entire library of PSP titles potentially, not just the ones curated for PlayStation Plus or the PlayStation Store. Unfortunately for fans excited about getting their hands on this hack, Nguyen has stated, «There's no release planned in the near future,» as there is still plenty of work to be done. Given the success of the post, however, the team may share some demonstration videos as early as this weekend.
Despite rumors that a new PlayStation handheld is in development, Sony has yet to announce any new hardware. After the failure of the PSP's successor, the PS Vita, Sony has more or less removed itself from the portable gaming market. That said, the success of the PlayStation Portal may lend credence to reports that suggest a new dedicated handheld device is on the way.
The success of the Nintendo Switch and various handheld gaming PCs like the Steam Deck and ROG Ally proves that there is a market for portable gaming devices. Rumors have even circulated that Microsoft could be planning a handheld Xbox console. Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer even stoked the Xbox handheld rumors through recent social media activity.
While not exactly a PSP successor, the PlayStation Portal solves an age-old issue of having to share one TV in a household. This remote play device allows users to stream whatever is happening on their

During the lifespan of the PlayStation 3, there were over 5,000 games released for the console. These titles covered every genre and style imaginable and ranged in quality, but included some of the best and most recognizable games of the generation. The sleek and versatile system found its way into many homes, particularly as it offered the ability to play Blu-ray movies as well as video games, and it had everything from family-friendly games to more gruesome and serious titles.
The latest update for Marvel's Spider-Man 2 promised a lot of long-awaited features, but I don't think anybody, including the developers at Insomniac, expected it to include a full debug menu loaded with goofy, game-breaking features and some apparent details about the game's DLC plans.
Sony has revealed the PlayStation Plus games for March 2024; four games will be available to active PlayStation Plus members starting March 5 through April 1.
You have almost a week until the next set of PlayStation Plus games are online but the reliable billbil-kun from Dealabs has got the scoop on one of the free titles. According to their sources the headline game for March 2024 will be former PlayStation console exclusive Sifu!
Despite mixed receptions to its reveal and niche usage, Sony’s PlayStation Portal has done pretty well, selling out in the UK and United States within two days of launch. If you thought demand had slowed over the months, PlayStation vice president of product management Hiromi Wakai confirmed the opposite.
They say you don’t know what’ll work until you try it out, and that’s been a staple of the gaming industry for decades! Between arcades, consoles, handhelds, and everything in between, publishers and developers have tried anything and everything to get people to come to their systems and try out their stuff. It doesn’t always work, but sometimes, you get a revolution, and that can lead to big things on the horizon. Last year, Sony unveiled the PlayStation Portal feature, which would give fans a mobile way to play their PS5 games in a more mobile capacity. At first, it seemed like a “weird peripheral” to have. However, the heads of Sony have been blown away by what it’s doing.
There was some more disheartening news from the game industry today. I’m sure you are already familiar with the news, but Sony unveiled plans to eliminate 900 jobs within the PlayStation Studios. It’s a trend we hope to see end as it’s been ongoing for a long time now. While we’re still dealing with the blowback in the gaming industry after the pandemic wrapped, we’re learning at least one game that was killed off from this recent batch of layoffs, and that’s Twisted Metal.
Firstly, let me be honest. Like 99% of gamers out there, I was convinced that the PlayStation Portal (Project Q, as it was once named) was just a clever money grab. I mean, why would players need a device that connects to their PS5 via WI-FI while they are out and about? We wanted a PS Vita 2 and not a glamourised tablet connected to a PlayStation 5 controller, right? Well, I’ll be the first to admit I was dead wrong. The PlayStation Portal is a lot more than a clever gimmick. It’s an innovative new way to play your favourite games while on the move. Let me explain.
The classic PlayStation Portable-era shooter Resistance: Retribution has received trophies as part of an update bringing it to Sony's PS Plus Premium Classics catalog. Part of the PlayStation-exclusive Resistance sci-fi series, Resistance: Retribution is the second game in the series to become playable on PS4 and PS5, after Resistance 3.
PlayStation Plus subscribers might already be familiar with what is soon leaving on the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog. However, if you haven’t browsed the Game Catalog recently, you will find seven more games heading out from the subscription service. These games are now under the Leaving Soon category, so if you haven’t given them a chance, your time is running out fast.
