Ed Boon Isn't Sure If Mortal Kombat Should Have A "No Gore" Setting

Don't expect Mortal Kombat 1 to hold back on the blood and guts, as series co-creator Ed Boon isn't sure if the game could work with a "no gore" setting. Boon's comments come as he is asked whether Mortal Kombat 1 could have a streamer mode, toning down some of the more graphic violence so streamers don't have to worry about potentially breaching either Twitch or YouTube's terms of service.
Speaking with IGN at Gamescom, Boon says that while he's open to the idea, he also fears that it would "strip away" too much of what makes Mortal Kombat special. He also says that he wouldn't want this less violent take on Mortal Kombat to be the "main representation" it gets online, since that would be pretty deceiving.

"Let's say we had a mode that turned off all the blood or something or didn't have fatalities or something like that. Part of the definition of Mortal Kombat is those things," says Boon, discussing a possible streamer mode in Mortal Kombat 1.
"And so to strip away an entire layer of it, do we really want that to be the main representation that is of the game online? It's not the whole presentation."
Boon is quick to add that it wouldn't be a "deal breaker" if they had to switch off fatalities, and it is something he would consider. However, he would want to keep it in the "spirit of what the game is", so still plenty violent.
It wouldn't be the first time a Mortal Kombat game has had to tone down its iconic barbarity. Ports of the original arcade games on home consoles would sometimes have the blood removed or changed to green. Fatalities would also be performed in black and white, with regulators feeling that this was enough to make them more palatable. Of course, with next-gen graphics in mind, that's unlikely to be enough all these years later.
Taking that into consideration, the only approach might be to remove blood entirely, as well as disable fatalities. Even then, the X-ray shots of bones being broken and contorted in ways not humanly possible will be disturbing enough, so that might not be terms of service compliant either.
Still, Boon has considered the idea, so streamers may be in luck further down the line. Just don't expect a PG experience at launch. Mortal Kombat X and 11 have also been stream-able without issue, so the series shouldn't be banned anytime soon.
