Dragon’s Dogma 2 is UK’s Biggest Game Launch of 2024 So Far

Fans of various video game series continue to suffer through a lack of new installments coming anytime soon. Amazon's Fallout adaptation, for example, has reminded us how long we are going to be waiting for Fallout 5. At least Bethesda has confirmed there's something to look forward to on the video game landscape. Rayman fans have had nothing major for more than a decade, and even though a lifeline was thrown their way this week, it isn't a new video game.

Baldur's Gate 3 continues to collect year-end honours as the expansive RPG from Larian Studios took home the top award at the 20th BAFTA Games Awards held in London late Thursday. The Dungeons & Dragons-style RPG was crowned as the Best Game, in addition to winning in four other categories on the night. Acclaimed survival-horror sequel Alan Wake 2, Nintendo platformer Super Mario Bros. Wonder and British indie Viewfinder won two BAFTAs each, while Cyberpunk 2077 continued its redemption story with a win in the Evolving Game category.

Capcom's RPG Dragon's Dogma 2 isn't even a month old, but one speedrunner has cleared it in less than two hours, all while playing «naked.» The new record adds to the tally of Dragon's Dogma 2 runs being racked up by highly skilled speedrunners.

2023 is a tough act to follow. IGN awarded 83 games a review score of 8 or higher last year, including five 10s — among which were two generational greats in Baldur’s Gate 3 and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. A year later, the release calendar looks comparatively light, with Switch all but certainly in its final year as Nintendo’s primary console and Sony not releasing "any new major existing franchise titles" until 2025.

Sony fans aren’t exactly in a great place this year. The current head of PlayStation, Hiroki Totoki, flat out confirmed that they don’t have any big scale first party AAAs scheduled to release for all of this financial year, and we are at month one of that period.

Ubisoft has confirmed their next Ubisoft Forward digital showcase will take place on 10th June during Summer Game Fest 2024.

It sounds like Dragon's Dogma 2 and Rise of the Ronin — both released on Friday of last week — have struggled to make an immediate impact in the UK. While we don't have the full sales charts just yet, GamesIndustry.biz's ever-knowledgeable Christopher Dring has outlined the relative success of the new releases, and it's fair to say that neither game has done well. At least, not at retail.

Capcom has made a strong mark on the modern open world space with the recently released Dragon’s Dogma 2, but it seems like the company has an even bigger behemoth waiting in the wings. Monster Hunter Wilds is set to launch sometime next year, and as per prominent leaker Dusk Golem, it’s set to be Capcom’s biggest game to date “by far”.
