Capcom's RPG Dragon's Dogma 2 isn't even a month old, but one speedrunner has cleared it in less than two hours, all while playing «naked.» The new record adds to the tally of Dragon's Dogma 2 runs being racked up by highly skilled speedrunners.
Thanks to its highly realized open world and its bold, uncompromising design, Dragon's Dogma 2 has captured the attention of the gaming public. The game builds on the sense of friction introduced by the original Dragon's Dogma, adding new Vocations and even deeper interaction between players and their customizable Pawn familiars. It's also paid off for Capcom, as the company reported that Dragon's Dogma 2 has sold millions of copies in its initial weeks since release.
With so many players braving the game's untamed wilds, a few inevitably managed to crack the secret of speedrunning the game. Focused on completing games as quickly as possible using any means necessary, the speedrunning community is able to marshal considerable skill and expertise to master even the largest sprawling open-world games. One such player is speedrunner Infected Durian, who completed a run of Dragon's Dogma 2 without using any armor, weapons, or glitches, in just 1:43:32.
What's notable about Infected Durian's run is the «naked» status of his playthrough of the game. During the whole run, Infected Durian never wore any armor or used anything other than his character's fists as weapons. The only time Infected Durian equipped gear or weapons was when the game forced him to, such as during an unavoidable scripted sequence where his character was automatically dressed in gear. Many players commenting on his run likened Infected Durian to famed naked Elden Ring player Let Me Solo Her.
Other speedrunners, including some who have faster completion records, did not have such restrictions in place for their runs, allowing their characters much greater combat potential. That said, Infected Durian was not completely without help or advantage. For one, his run is based on a high-level New Game Plus character, meaning his character has much better attributes than a first-time player's. Additionally, Infected Durian freely used the Pawns of other players, including ones with their own equipment, Vocations, and powerful combat and quest knowledge. Pawns are the most unique gameplay system in Dragon's Dogma 2, and the presence of high-level Pawns made the run much safer than it would've been had he played without their help. In fact, Infected Durian himself said that the run would probably take «like 16 hours» if he were to swear off using Pawns.
Speedruns continue to combine the dedicated play of players with the kind of mastery that only arises from deep familiarity with the games they tackle.
