Dragon's Dogma 2 will have an uncapped frame rate from day one, a senior Capcom official has said, albeit while leaving some finer details about that statement open to interpretation. This exciting feature confirmation arrives mere weeks ahead of the AAA RPG's release, with Dragon's Dogma 2 being scheduled to hit the PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC on March 22.
Although the ninth console generation was widely touted as the one to standardize 4K gameplay at 60 frames per second, that hasn't exactly come to pass just yet. Not only are plenty of modern games still locked to 30fps, but even some older titles have so far proved challenging to optimize in order to take full advantage of the stronger hardware through backward compatibility. For example, despite significant fan activism, Microsoft was unable to deliver a frame rate boost to the original Dragon's Dogma running on the Xbox Series X/S.
This January, rumors emerged that Dragon's Dogma 2 would not run at 60fps on either the PS5 or Xbox Series X and would instead be capped at half that figure. The game's director, Hideaki Itsuno, has now taken to social media to clarify that the upcoming open-world RPG won't impose a hard limit on its rendering performance. "Dragon's Dogma 2 will release with an uncapped frame rate," the industry veteran wrote on Twitter.
Since Itsuno's statement did not include any specific platform references, some fans took this to mean that the promise of an uncapped frame rate applies to all versions of Dragon's Dogma 2, having said as much on social media. And while the comment does dispel the rumor that the RPG would be limited to 30fps, it remains to be seen whether its uncapped frame rate allows the game to actually approach 60fps on consoles consistently.
The only thing that's certain following Itsuno's feature confirmation is that PC gamers, many of whom have already pre-ordered Dragon's Dogma 2, won't have to deal with frame rate caps and should be able to enjoy a high frame rate if their rigs are powerful enough. Meanwhile, those with more modest machines should actually be hoping that the PC version of the game does include an FPS limiter, albeit one that is user-configurable. That kind of functionality is helpful for tweaking performance and can even improve stability in some cases.
Console gamers hoping that Dragon's Dogma 2 will be a highly performant game should find Capcom's track record with ninth-generation titles to be fairly encouraging; many of the best games that can run at 4K and 60fps on the PS5 and Xbox Series X happen to be Capcom titles, so there is precedent to suggest that the Dragon's Dogma sequel won't leave fans wanting in that regard.
