Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince details new battle and monster recruiting systems

Square Enix’s Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth has received new gameplay and details thanks to various hands-on impressions over the past few days. However, the development team hosted a stage event at Tokyo Game Show 2023 to show off even more, from The Grasslands and its mini-games to more combat. If there’s one that recent weeks have taught us about Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Square Enix’s second part in the remake trilogy, it’s the sheer size of its world. Final Fantasy 7 Remake was a bit more confined due to its chapter-wise setup and Midgar setting, but Rebirth goes much bigger and employs a seamless map.

This is a complete remake of the RPG Star Ocean the Second Story (SO2), which was released on the original PlayStation in 1998, critically acclaimed for its Dual Protagonist system, 3D combat, deep skill systems, Private Actions, multiple endings, and much more.

As gamers know quite well, there are plenty of remakes being made right now across all the major publishers. That includes Square Enix, who right now is working on at least three remakes and is possibly doing even more that gamers might not know about yet. One of those remakes is the classic Dragon Quest III from the earlier days of consoles. However, this one isn’t getting the 3D treatment, unlike other modern remakes. Instead, it’s getting the 2.5-HD treatment that Square Enix has made popular. The style is fitting for the title, given its sprite-based origins, and many are eager to play it when it releases.

Back in May 2021, the future of the Dragon Quest franchise was revealed, with several new titles like Dragon Quest Treasures, Dragon Quest 12: The Flames of Fate and an HD-2D remake of Dragon Quest 3 being announced. Dragon Quest Treasures is available for Nintendo Switch (and recently on PC), and the team revealed last year that it was working hard on the next mainline title.

Development on the May 2021-announced Dragon Quest III in HD-2D (title temporary) is “progressing quite steadily,” Dragon Quest series creator Yuji Horii told Famitsu during an interview at World Cosplay Summit 2023 in Nagoya in early August.
