Diablo 4 ’s first major expansion has been announced. Vessel of Hatred was announced at BlizzCon today with a brief teaser video and the title, with more info to come tomorrow when the Diablo 4 team presents.
The expansion is set to release “late 2024” so it will be a while. In the meantime, Blizzard’s plans for Diablo 4 have been confirmed as Seasons with new content and a series of annual expansions. With that in mind, there’s still plenty of content to come until Vessel of Hatred’s release.
Tomorrow, the Diablo 4 team will hold a Campfire Chat live at BlizzCon at 2:30 PM PDT. This presentation will feature Brent Gibson, associate game director, production director Tiffany Wat, lead game producer Kalyeigh Calder, game director Joe Shely, and associate director of community Adam Fletcher leading the discussion. Now that the expansion has been revealed, expect more on that, but also the current season and more that will come between now and Vessel of Hatred.
Diablo will also be coming to a tabletop game session near you next year. Glass Cannon Unplugged and Blizzard announced a multi-year agreement to bring Diablo to tabletop with games taking inspiration from the full Diablo universe.
Diablo: The Roleplaying Game, due in fall 2024, has a core engine based on Diablo IV. Diablo: The Board Game is a co-op adventure board game that is headed for a 2025 release. The announcement promises that both games will have some interchangeable components, shared accessories, and eventual expansions that complement each other.

surprised many in the audience at this year's BlizzCon 2023 event by announcing many new features and content updates to the game, including a new expansion, that is due to launch next year. This, combined with many new quality-of-life changes that continue to be added to the dungeon-crawling experience and a new holiday event that is coming soon gave plenty to talk about at the convention. Much was revealed initially during the opening showcase of BlizzCon 2023, with more details given the following day at a live Campfire Chat with some of the devs.
I do not greatly enjoy the playing of Diablo 4, but I do rather enjoy its hellish setting, which I would characterise as a Warhammer table-top diorama dunked in a bucket of frozen offal. As such, I'm tickled gall-bladder-pink to hear that Blizzard consider the action-RPG series "a wonderful platform" for different types of game, now that they've made the leap to an open world format.
The issue of players not being able to loot Potent Blood has been resolved, however, Diablo 4 Global Community Development Director, Adam Fletcher, has stated that the team will need additional time to resolve the issue of players not being able to progress their Season Journeys. Diablo 4 Patch 1.2.2 Hotfix 2 — Potent Blood Season Journey Progression Issues — Diablo 4 While this issue was expected to be resolved alongside the Potent Blood Hotfix today, the team has stated that they will require additional testing in order to ensure that the Season Journey is working properly. Diablo 4's upcoming Vessel of Hatred expansion isn't bringing back older classes because Blizzard feels "responsible to offer new ways to play."
Since Season of Blood began, we have known its end date from several in-game reminders and tooltips. However, at BlizzCon, Blizzard shared a screenshot that appeared to be from an internal build, which showed a slightly different Season 2 end date. Best Builds for Malignant Rings Midwinter Blight Event Gameplay While in-game, the end date of Season of Blood has always been displayed as January 23, 2024, during BlizzCon, and in their latest Abattoir of Zir YouTube video, it appears that the developer's internal build shows a Season 2 end date of January 26, 2024. So, why are these two dates different, and why is this significant? This is purely speculative, but it is our hope that the January 23rd date is the true end date of Season 2 and that the January 26th date is the beginning of Season 3. If you attempted to play during the launch of Season 2, then you're well aware that the transition between Season 1 and Season 2 was very rocky, to say the least.
During BlizzCon 2023, Blizzard Entertainment revealed what many Diablo players knew was coming — a new expansion for Diablo 4. Vessel of Hatred will expand upon the events that took place through the campaign and introduce a new class to the roster that has never been seen before in the Diablo universe. Polygon spoke with members of the core development team for Diablo 4 to ask about the various production cycles the now-live service game has gone through, and how the team plans to deliver content and make adjustments through planned updates.
The search for the Diablo 4 cow level is much more than a cowspiracy (apologies) at this point. IGN spoke to the game's production developer Tiffany Wat, and associate game director Joe Piepiora at BlizzCon 2023 where hints were dropped, adding more fuel to the fire. It's not much to go on, but Wat may have hinted that players are heading in the right direction: «I will say, however, if people have picked up any items from their cow campaigns… cow slay-age campaign… they should hang on to them.»
Blizzard may have turned Diablo 4 around in the last month, but there's still plenty of work to do before the release of its first expansion, Vessel of Hatred. BlizzCon's Diablo 4 Campfire Chat stream had surprisingly little to say about the action RPG's major remaining issues: dull itemization and a barren endgame.
During BlizzCon 2023, Blizzard Entertainment finally revealed its first paid expansion for Diablo 4 – Vessel of Hatred, which ventures to Torjang. As rumored, Mephisto will be the focus this time, and players can expect a new class unlike anything seen in the series. While the expansion is a ways off, we won’t have to wait too long for more information.
Diablo 4's developers have offered up a slight tease about the sought-after 'cow level'.
Should you expect to see Master Chief or his iconic MJOLNIR armor appear in Diablo 4 anytime soon? The game's associate game director laughed off such a suggestion at BlizzCon 2023, with Brent Gibson telling me that "fans have speculated about all sorts of collaborations" following the acquisition of Blizzard Entertainment by Microsoft Gaming.
