Dead Island 2 is scheduled for release on an unidentified platform in the coming year.
That’s according to Embracer Group CEO Lars Wingefors, who discussed the performance of the game and its future prospects during the company’s quarterly earnings call on Thursday.
First announced in 2014, the zombie action RPG suffered a series of delays and changes of developer during a turbulent production cycle.
Dambuster, an internal Deep Silver studio, took over development in 2019 and the game was finally released in April for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and PC via the Epic Games Store.
Dead Island 2 exceeded expectations at launch, selling one million copies in three days and two million in its first month, according to Embracer.
“I think Dead Island had a really strong release window, then we have been seeing more normal performance, according to expectations,” Wingefors said today.
“What we now expect obviously is promotions, but primarily the addition of new content coming through, so there is a significant amount of content coming through for the game in the year, that would improve the sales of the base game as well.
“Then looking a year ahead, we would have a release on another platform that will also drive multiple sales.”
While Wingefors didn’t elaborate on future release plans, he may have been referring to plans to bring the PC version of the game to Steam.
It’s also possible that it could come to a Nintendo system, either Switch or its successor, which is expected to launch in the second half of 2024. VGC has contacted publisher Deep Silver for comment.
Two Dead Island 2 story expansions are in the works. The first, Haus, will arrive in the fourth quarter of 2023, with the second, SOLA Festival, following in the second quarter of 2024. Both are included in the game’s $29.99 / £24.99 Expansion Pass.
A few weeks ago, former ArenaNet and then Undead Labs co-founder Jeff Strain and Annie Delisi Strain announced Fang and Claw, a new triple-A addition to Prytana Media's portfolio of game development studios.
Volition Games, the studio behind Saints Row and Red Faction, has been permanently shut down due to the "restructuring" policy adopted by parent company Embracer Group.
Red Dead Redemption series writer Michael Unsworth has signalled his departure from developer Rockstar Games, after 16 years at the company.
The reboot of Saints Row is now available on Steam, and has been heavily discounted until the end of August.
The Walking Dead universe is set to get another addition as GameMill Entertainment and AMC have announced a new game, The Walking Dead: Destinies. It is a third-person choice-driven action-adventure game and a spin-off of AMC's popular post-apocalyptic TV show The Walking Dead. The game will be based on the events of the earlier 1-4 seasons of the show and will present a choice to players to influence canon events that they have already witnessed on the small screen.
Sweden's Embracer Group saw a 47 per cent increase in net sales for the first quarter of its financial year.
Yesterday, renowned leaker billbill-kun unveiled The Walking Dead: Destinies, a new game set in the universe created by Robert Kirkman. A third-person action/adventure game developed by GameMill Entertainment, the biggest draw of The Walking Dead: Destinies is that it'll allow players to rewrite the story of the first four seasons of the beloved AMC show.
Embracer CEO confident amid ongoing challenges and restructuring.
The wait for Dead Island 2 lasted nearly a decade, but the game did finally launch earlier this year, and turned out to be a critical and commercial success. In May, it was revealed that the action RPG had sold over 2 million units worldwide, and interestingly enough, Embracer Group – parent company of publisher Deep Silver – is expecting those sales to accelerate next year when the game launches for another platform.
Embracer said its restructuring program is on track and confirmed it's quietly moving forward with studio closures.
There was plenty of excitement and hype over the Dead Island 2 release. The video game was first announced several years ago before it went into development hell. Fans waited what felt like an eternity for this game to make its way out into the marketplace. We saw the game project exchange developer hands between its announcement and the eventual release. It wouldn’t be until Dambuster Studios received the IP that we saw Dead Island 2 actually launch into the marketplace earlier this year.
Details on a new game based on AMC’s The Walking Dead TV series have seemingly leaked.
