Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty Has Sold More than 5 Million Units in 2023

Not long after Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope’s launch, Ubisoft revealed that in spite of the widespread acclaim it had garnered, the turn-based tactics title had failed to sell to the company’s internal expectations, with CEO Yves Guillemot later stating that the game likely would have sold better if it had been released for the Nintendo Switch’s successor, something that Nintendo has advised Ubisoft on as well.

Cyberpunk 2077’s Phantom Liberty expansion has been successful for CD Projekt RED, selling over five million copies last year. However, perhaps more impressive is the attach rate, which co-CEO Michał Nowakowski confirmed is approximately 23 percent to IGN.

CD Projekt has deemed Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty a commercial success after revealing it hit similar numbers to The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt's expansions, Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine.

With the holiday season now behind us, folks are settling back to work, including the CD Projekt Red team, who are kicking off the new year by kickstarting work on Project Orion, aka the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077.

Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty has performed just as well as The Witcher 3's DLC offerings despite being released years after the base game.

Cyberpunk 2077 came out on December 10, 2022, nearly three years ago. It was a mess at launch, so bad in fact that it was pulled from the PlayStation store amidst an influx of refund demands. CD Projekt Red got to work on updating the game to fix the myriad problems plaguing performance, while also working to introduce some of the key promises absent in the final game such as a working metro, ultimately delaying DLC plans.

Developer Massive Monster and publisher Devolver Digital have announced that roguelite title Cult of the Lamb has hit a major milestone; the game has sold over 3.5 million copies. The milestone was announced alongside details of the game’s upcoming Sins of the Flesh update.

Hogwarts Legacy was one of 2023’s more controversial releases, thanks to it being attached to Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling and her transphobic views, but it was, unsurprisingly, also among the biggest games of the year, something that’s been reflected in its sales as well.

Since its release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC last February, developer Avalanche's Hogwarts Legacy has continued to sell well. It has maintained the top position almost every month for best-selling games in the U.S., too. Thanks to a new interview at Variety with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment president David Haddad, we now know Hogwarts Legacy has surpassed 22 million copies sold and it did so in less than a year. 

Much like Soulsborne titles, PvP/PvE survival games like Rust and DayZ are known for being quite punishing. However, it’s this brutality that’s evidently one of the reasons they’re so popular. Speaking of Rust, it recently turned 10 and the developer has shared some interesting stats about the game.
