Microsoft's top brass revealed the release window for 2024's Call of Duty game at a recent meeting, according to a report. Previous rumors have already provided the supposed setting for the series' next game, which is expected to be developed by veteran studio Treyarch.
Call of Duty is among the few video game franchises that commits to an annual release schedule, with the series having received a new mainline entry every year since 2005. It seems like this arrangement will be left untouched even after series publisher Activision was absorbed by Microsoft last year, as some of the tech giant's executives have reportedly disclosed the release window for the next Call of Duty title.
During a virtual town hall that took place on February 13, Microsoft Gaming CEO and Xbox brand head Phil Spencer revealed to employees that a new Call of Duty game should come out in October 2024, the media outlet Inverse reported, citing multiple unnamed sources who were present at the meeting. Past reports suggested that 2024's Call of Duty entry will be set in the Gulf War and focus mostly on the CIA's involvement in the conflict.
Treyarch, which introduced the franchise's popular Zombies mode in its 2008 release, Call of Duty: World at War, is expected to spearhead the series' next title. The studio's last mainline entry was 2020's Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, a game that received generally positive reviews. Should it develop the next title in the franchise, Treyarch has the opportunity to address fans' issues with recent Call of Duty Zombies experiences in the next game, including their lack of consistency with seasonal content.
Regardless of each game's perceived quality, every mainline Call of Duty title has managed to become a commercial hit. Even last year's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 was, at least in the United States, one of the best-selling games of 2023 despite failing to impress both critics and fans alike. The latest installment's single-player campaign, in particular, was called out for being too short and rushed. While the franchise is mostly known for its competitive multiplayer segments, Call of Duty also has some incredible single-player campaigns.
In addition to revealing the release window for 2024's Call of Duty game, Spencer also told employees that Xbox would have more hardware in the future. Previous rumors indicated that Microsoft could release a new Xbox console in 2026, though it was unclear if this was supposed to be an update to the current Series X/S line or a new system altogether. Spencer, Xbox president Sarah Bond, and Xbox Game Studios head Matt Booty are expected to discuss the brand's future on the Official Xbox Podcast on February 15.

Back in 2022, Vera Drew’s highly personal, incredibly irreverent stylized memoir movie The People’s Joker made a splashy debut at the Toronto International Film Festival — in that immediately after its premiere, DC Comics’ parent company, Warner Bros., filed a cease-and-desist order against the movie, shutting down all subsequent screenings and throwing the movie’s future into doubt. It’s taken years for the film to see the light of day, outside of the occasional festival screening. I saw it at the 2023 Fantastic Fest, where Vera Drew was present to talk about the experience, but was careful not to address the question of whether her film might ever get a real theatrical run. But now, according to the poster, it’s “coming soon. Legally. Seriously.”
