This year’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III hasn’t gone over great guns with fans, and so, a lot of them are already turning their attention to next year’s CoD experience. We know the next Call of Duty is being developed by the dependable folks at Treyarch, will almost certainly come under the Black Ops banner, and recent evidence has pointed to the game being set in around the First Gulf War. Well, new sources have emerged to “confirm” the Gulf War setting.
According to a report from Windows Central’s Jez Corden, they’ve confirmed with “multiple sources” that Call of Duty 2024 will be a Black Ops game set during the Gulf War with the usual focus on what CIA operatives were up to during the war. The project is apparently going by the codename “Cerberus” and it is speculated it will likely be titled Call of Duty: Black Ops Gulf War (following on from Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War).
Apparently, the game will try to present a “nuanced narrative” (at least, as nuanced as CoD gets) from multiple viewpoints. We had previously reported on rumors the game’s scope may actually expand well beyond the First Gulf War to the 2003 Iraq War and “Operation Enduring Freedom,” the codename for the President-Bush-initiated Global War on Terror. Corden does not mention whether that will be the case in his report, but if it is, Treyarch will definitely have to step very carefully to avoid controversy.
Turning our eye from Call of Duty 2024’s subject matter, Corden also lets slip that there might be a particularly significant early access period for the game. While we can likely expect the usual several-day early access for the entire experience, some parts of the game may launch weeks early. One reason Treyarch may have the freedom to do this is because, unlike CoD Modern Warfare III, which was developed over only 1.5 years, CoD 2024 will have been in development for 4 years by the time it launches.
Of course, take this with a grain of salt for now. Jez Corden has a somewhat sketchy track record, but much of this info have been at least partly corroborated by other sources.
What do you think? Does Call of Duty: Black Ops Gulf War have a ring to it? Looking forward to a CoD that’s actually had a decent amount of development time?
