This year's Game Awards ceremony garnered a lot of justified criticism for the way it rushed winning developers off stage in favour of adverts, rambling conversations with Hideo Kojima, and celebrity cameos from the likes of Timothée Chalamet.

With The Game Awards 2023 now squarely in the rear view mirror, it's time to reflect on what was shown during Geoff Keighley's big end of year bash. Criticisms of the format and actual award presentations aside, the event did give us some significant game reveals.

Square Enix had said that details on Final Fantasy 16's paid DLC would drop before the end of 2023, and so all eyes were on The Game Awards in anticipation. Thankfully, the team delivered, and we got a rather rousing reveal trailer. The footage looked great, but what really won people over was the immediate release of the first expansion, Echoes of the Fallen. A very effective shadow drop, and The Rising Tide will tempt players back in Spring 2024.
Black Myth: Wukong has been hovering around for what feels like an age. Everything we've seen of the project has looked extremely promising, but developer Game Science has always refused to pencil in a release date. That is, until this latest trailer. Yep, Wukong still looks stunning, and now we know when it's coming. Whether the game actually sticks to August 2024, we'll have to wait and see, but for now, let's just pretend that it's 100% happening. Finally!
We'd argue Rise of the Ronin was one of the standout games at this year's show. PlayStation fans have been waiting to hear more about this Team Ninja title for a while, and so an action-packed gameplay trailer accompanied by a release date was a surefire win. What's more, said release date is actually a lot sooner than people were predicting; Rise of the Ronin's out in March — on the same day as Dragon's Dogma 2. Mercy!
This was a weird announcement, wasn't it? But there's no question that it got people hyped. In case you missed it, SEGA brought an eye-popping trailer to The Game Awards 2023, in which it showcased a bunch of in-development projects that will revive a selection of beloved but dormant properties. That includes Jet Set Radio, Crazy Taxi, Streets of Rage, Golden Axe, and Shinobi. This trailer was the definition of nostalgia overload, and we can't wait for SEGA to drop some additional details.
Proving once again that you can't argue with free DLC, God of War Ragnarok: Valhalla had the best showing at The Game Awards 2023 (according to the

The Game Awards have enjoyed consistent growth since the first showcase took place in December 2014, to the point where they have become an integral pillar for the community, especially in terms of new reveals and announcements by developers and publishers all around the world. This year’s showcase, like previous years’, was another one to exhibit continued growth for the event.
The Game Awards 2023 has broken its own viewership record, clocking up around 118 million livestreams.
The Game Awards has come and gone again, with 2023's show proving somewhat contentious, depending on who you ask. Something that became increasingly apparent as the show progressed was the pressure winners appeared to be under to wrap things up. Even Larian Studios founder Swen Vincke, who managed to snag Game of the Year with Baldur's Gate 3, appeared to be whisked off the stage after around 30 seconds, surprisingly spry in a suit of armour.
Game developers have a problem with this year’s Game Awards.
2023 has been a phenomenal year for gaming, and this December's The Game Awards event offered one of the most exciting shows in recent memory. The Game Awards 2023 wrapped earlier today, marking an epic conclusion to this year's video game season and celebrating the best games released in the past year. The lengthy ceremony was once again hosted by Geoff Keighley, live from Los Angeles, with Baldur's Gate 3 taking home the coveted Game of the Year award. As usual, there were a few exciting new announcements, and while some expectations were crushed, there's still a bunch to look forward to. Standout reveals this year include a collaboration between Hideo Kojima and filmmaker Jordan Peele, a free DLC for God of War Ragnarök, yet another Skull and Bones release date, and more surprises.
Baldur's Gate III took home the top honour at The Game Awards 2023, held early Friday in Los Angeles, besting its lead competitor Alan Wake II. The Dungeons & Dragons-based sprawling RPG, which was strongly revered by both fans and critics alike, bagged six trophies, including Best Community Support and Best Performance. The latter was collected by Neil Newbon, who played Astarion, the silver-haired vampire spawn, holding our attention with his melodramatic persona and the occasional high-pitched screeches. Meanwhile, Remedy's Alan Wake 2 won four awards across some of the most important categories, with co-directors Sam Lake and Kyle Rowley emerging as the best game directors of the year, alongside a writing/ narrative nod.
