The question of when Baldur's Gate 3 would release on Xbox, if ever, was uncertain until this week, not because of messy console exclusivity politics, but because of console gaming's gradual transformation into a wonky kind of PC gaming.

After the resounding success of Baldur's Gate 3 Larian has unexpectedly expressed a desire to develop a smaller title next time.
Despite the widespread success of Baldur's Gate 3, Larian's CEO, Swen Vincke, has discussed plans for the studio's future in the wake of the significant early access hit. In a discussion with Bloomberg, Vincke mentions that while the studio's future is uncertain, the developers do know that they want to work on something smaller. No one at Larian wants to spend another six years developing a single game. At least, not yet.
“It’s like making a movie — or many movies at the same time,” Vincke said. “We didn’t expect we’d need a lighting team, or a cinematics QA team or such a large audio team.”
Baldur's Gate 3 is off to a cracking start, quickly becoming the second-biggest launch of 2023 so far. After its official release this Thursday, the role-playing title hit its peak concurrent player count of 700,000, according to SteamDB.
You can currently play Baldur's Gate 3 on PC, with the PS5 version releasing next month. However, those with Xbox Series X|S will have to wait for at least another year. On Twitter, Larian's director of publishing, Michael Douse, implied the issues relating to the launch on Xbox may not be resolved until 2024.
“We have quite a few engineers working very hard to do what no other RPG of this scale has achieved – seamless drop-in, drop-out co-op on Series S,” Douse wrote. “We hope to have an update by the end of the year.”
In the meantime, the Baldur's Gate 3 devs are advising players to delete their early access saves and uninstall the game ahead of playing the 1.0 release.

Amazing news for RPG fans on Xbox who’ve been patiently waiting for the release of Baldur’s Gate 3 — Larian Studios boss Swen Vincke has confirmed that the title will be launching on Xbox Series X|S this year.
Baldur's Gate III is arguably the game of the summer, and it isn't even out on consoles yet. Developer Larian Studios has taken a "it'll be out when it's ready" approach to releasing the game on various platforms. After becoming an instant hit on Windows when it came out of early access earlier this month, Baldur's Gate III will land on PlayStation 5 and macOS on September 6th. The exact Xbox release date is still unclear, but Larian has finally confirmed the massive RPG will come to Microsoft's consoles later this year.
Larian Studios will bring Baldur’s Gate 3 to Xbox Series X (and Series S) later this year, the studio’s creative director, Swen Vincke, confirmed Thursday. That’s good news for players on Xbox who have been waiting for news on the Dungeons & Dragons game, as until recently it seemed like they would have to wait until 2024.
There is quite a bit of anticipation and excitement for September. We have two significant releases happening on the same day, and it will hopefully provide a thrilling RPG experience for both Xbox and PlayStation fans. As you might already know, September 6, 2023, is bringing out both Starfield on Xbox Series X/S and PC, while Sony PlayStation 5 fans are getting a copy of Baldur’s Gate 3. However, there was some concern online recently that Baldur’s Gate 3 might be in a bit of trouble.
Baldur's Gate 3 will offer parity with patches between PC and PS5 platforms because it's "the consumer-friendly thing to do."
While the wait for Baldur's Gate 3 has been an interminable one, an advantage to having to endure a month of PC players tearing it apart is that aspects of the game that really need improving are being detected and actioned by developer Larian Studios. One quite baffling missing feature is the ability to change how your character looks (outside of equipment), which you cannot currently do after character creation, not even their hairstyle.
Baldur's Gate III is prepared to receive its first patch and by the looks of it, it seems like a huge one. Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke confirmed a roadmap on Twitter, promising to fix issues and make relevant tweaks to ability balances, based on user suggestions. First up, is hotfix #4, which would make some emergency fixes to crashes and progressions blocks, in addition to any bugs that hinder the general interface. That will be followed by the massive patch, boasting over 1,000 fixes, followed by patch 2, which will ‘incorporate some requests.' It's unclear what those requests could be, but we already know that the team is planning an update that would let players change their character's appearance mid-game.
It doesn't take a lot for your party in Baldur's Gate 3 to get down and dirty. No, I don't mean it in that way, but I suppose that's true as well. Putting that aside for now - hygiene. The Baldur's Gate 3 gang certainly struggles to maintain it. Thankfully, players have found a solution that doesn't require resting every five minutes.
Baldur’s Gate 3 players will soon have the ability to change the way that their character looks mid-game.
Baldur's Gate 3
Baldur’s Gate 3 is not only my favorite RPG game of all time, but it’s hands-down the greatest gameplay experience that I’ve ever had. Larian Studios recently released the Dungeons & Dragons-inspired game out of early access, and it has since been flying through every chart imaginable. Among the vast variety of features found in Baldur’s Gate 3, character appearance changes are nowhere to be found. Larian Studios has just confirmed that they are indeed working on implementing such a system, though.
