El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron, previously released on the PS3 and Xbox 360, is making its way to the Nintendo Switch. There are plenty of games to play in the current generation, but as time passes, gamers occasionally want to try out or even replay games from previous ones. This is why remasters are particularly appreciated, because they allow games that are stuck on older hardware and inaccessible to many gamers to be enjoyed. The Switch offers an even greater advantage, with the ability to play these games on the go.
One of these games previously stuck on old hardware is El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron. El Shaddai was originally developed by Ignition Tokyo, a studio that included several former members of Clover Studio, the team responsible for many of Capcom's PS2 Era classics like Viewtiful Joe. El Shaddai offers a biblically-inspired hack-and-slash journey with an emphasis on its aesthetic elements. The game is considered to be a cult classic by fans. Although El Shaddai reviewed generally well, it did not make enough sales to be considered a success at the time. The remaster was released on Steam in 2021 and welcomed with very positive reviews.
Studio Crim is giving El Shaddai another chance as it makes its way over to the Nintendo Switch on April 28. This version of the game is an HD remaster. Physical editions of the game will be released by Limited Run Games. Limited Run is a popular physical game vendor, especially for more niche releases like this. Additionally, there will be standard and deluxe editions of the game. The deluxe copy will include an OST CD, a reversible poster, and a Nephilim Enamel Pin.
This release marks the continuation of a consistent stream of games prolonging the life of the Switch this year. Although gamers are anticipating news about the successor to the Switch, there are no new hardware announcements from Nintendo. This and the rumors within the gaming space point to the idea that the console will spend another year as Nintendo's priority.
Although the first-party Switch library is strong, sometimes players crave something with a more niche and soulful appeal in the same vein as El Shaddai. Gamers who enjoy the spiritual tone and aesthetic focus may also appreciate the Bantu mythology-inspired game Tales of Kenzera: Zau. This game is not a remaster of a classic like El Shaddai, but it may offer plenty to players looking for something similar.
