Today, publisher Mindscape Games and developer Aesir Interactive announced Windstorm: The Legend of Khiimori, a new entry in the equine-focused franchise that also features Windstorm: Start of a Great Friendship (which is getting a remaster in June) and Windstorm: An Unexpected Arrival.
This new game will be a bit different. While still keeping a focus on equine gameplay with realistic physics, it's being designed as an open world title powered by Unreal Engine 5 technology. Moreover, it's actually set in 13th-century Mongolia. Here, players will assume the role of a young courier rider. Horses will be essential to survival and safety as players breed, tame, and train new ones to help them navigate the vast Mongolian landscape.
As players immerse themselves in the vast open world of Windstorm: The Legend of Khiimori, which the developers promise will be filled with wonders and intriguing stories, they will need to strategically plan their routes through various biomes of beautiful yet harsh terrain and overcome the challenges of the wilderness to complete their missions. Tasks available in the game include cultivating the nomad camp, building yurts, managing important items and resources, and training and caring for their horses.
Wolfgang Emmer, CEO of Aesir Interactive, said in a statement:
The Windstorm series has connected with so many people over the years, and we’re looking forward to entering a new generation in the franchise with Windstorm: The Legend of Khiimori. Our team has been hard at work refining and innovating gameplay to deliver the most realistic horse gameplay experience, approved by experts. We’re eager for players to experience the legendary bond between horse and rider, whether they are a longtime fan or discovering the adventures of Windstorm for the very first time.
Windstorm: The Legend of Khiimori will be released on Steam Early Access in September, though the developers warn it will be at an early stage of development, where the team can gather feedback to improve the game over time.
