Ubisoft has laid off more than 100 staff, continuing what feels like an unending wave of layoffs across the video games industry. The latest job losses spanning visual effects and IT departments come less than six months after the Assassin’s Creed and Rainbow Six publisher made dozens of custom service staff redundant.
Ubisoft Montreal's Derennes appointed head of North American production

French publishing giant Ubisoft is bringing management of its North American studios under Christophe Derennes (pictured).
In a post on Ubisoft Montreal website, the company said that the studio's head would be appointed as MD for all of its North American outposts. Ubisoft is framing this as Ubisoft Montreal becoming its North American 'hub'.
This will incorporate studios in Montreal, Quebec City, Saguenay, Sherbrooke, Toronto, and Winnipeg, in addition to developers in the USA, like San Francisco, Atlanta and Cary, North Carolina.
Even before this, Montreal as seen as Ubisoft's crown jewel, often sitting at the centre of the company's big ticket productions.
“I am very happy to have this opportunity to work with all these teams," Derennes said.
"We will be able to take advantage of each studio’s strengths, and unique capacities and expertise. I believe that increased collaboration will allow our teams to support one another, learn from each other, and above all, inspire each other to create the best games for our players."
Derennes has worked at Ubisoft for over 28 years now and was appointed as Montreal studio head back in July 2020. That, of course, was in the wake of a number of high-level management being ousted following allegations of widespread harassment and abuse at the company.
