The Video Game Industry Has Already Lost 5000 Jobs In 2024

Baldur's Gate 3 is a bright spot in an altogether down financial report from Wizards of the Coast owner Hasbro, which says Larian's "mega hit" RPG, having driven around $90 million in revenue in the last year, is a good sign for more video games to come from the D&D license.

Investors and publishers spend billions of dollars on the video game industry each year, but just a small fraction of that money goes toward funding game companies led by women and those from other marginalized groups. Even as venture capitalist funding surged in 2021 as a response to COVID-19 pandemic restrictions, video game companies led by all-male founders brought in $4.1 billion in funding to the $1.2 million for companies with all-female founders, according to data provided to Polygon from investment research company PitchBook. (In 2021, gaming companies with mixed-gender founders — i.e., those including at least one woman — received $400.9 million in 62 deals, according to the data.)

That includes a number of elements from the video game world as Mario has his very own Lego Mushroom Kingdom, and even Horizon's Tallneck has its own set. The dream continues for independent Japanese developer Pocketpair as Palworld has now sold over seven million units in just five days since its early access launch. The open world survival crafting game with monster collection mechanics had sold one million in eight hours, two in twenty-four, three in forty, five million in three days, and six in four days. One of the more amusingly bizarre news stories of the early days of 2024 arrived earlier this week when it emerged that Rockstar Games’ parent company Take-Two Interactive had filed a trademark dispute against Remedy Entertainment’s new logo, claiming that it was too similar to the GTA maker’s logo, which also prominently displays a stylized “R”.
