Evil Empire, the developers behind The Rogue Prince of Persia, compared notes with Ubisoft Montpellier, the team behind The Lost Crown, since the two were being made around the same time.
Up until this year, Prince of Persia has spent more than a decade rotting away in Ubisoft's cupboard despite fans begging to see the series make a return. That wish was already granted incredibly well with Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown a few months ago, but we're already getting a second serving with The Rogue Prince of Persia, a roguelike from the Dead Cells team that was announced last week.
It's a little wild to see two Prince of Persia games launching within a few months of each other after the series has been next to silent since 2010's underrated The Forgotten Sands, but if it means that we're getting more from one of Ubisoft's best series, I'm all for it. As it turns out, though, there's a nice connection between The Rogue Prince and The Lost Crown, even if they're completely separate games.
As reported by Game Rant, Evil Empire and Ubisoft Montpellier actually worked closely together while developing their Prince of Persia games to make sure they weren't doing the same thing as one another and to ensure they were presenting the series in two different ways. This was confirmed by The Rogue Prince of Persia's director Lucie Dewagnier, who said Evil Empire even got to play The Lost Crown during its alpha.
Yeah, we absolutely compared notes. We played their game when they were still in the alpha stages, so it was near the beginning of development for The Rogue Prince of Persia. We communicated with each other regularly to make sure we were not doing the same things, and to take notes on what they were doing and what we were doing to make sure that we were making two different views of the same franchise.
Dewagnier revealed that The Rogue Prince of Persia started development around the time that The Lost Crown was in its alpha stages, which indicates that Ubisoft Montpellier's game was started a fair bit earlier than The Rogue Prince was. With The Rogue Prince of Persia launching in Early Access and The Lost Crown having plenty of content on the way, let's hope that collaboration continues in the future.

After the launch of the excellent Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown at the beginning of 2024, no one was expecting a second game in the franchise so soon. And yet, The Rogue Prince of Persia was revealed during the Triple-I Initiative as a roguelike take on the genre.
