Two of the free monthly games from the PlayStation Plus Essentials November 2023 line up have been announced by Sony with Aliens: Fireteam Elite leading the way for some online co-op alien blasting!
As always there are three games on offer through the month, available from the first Tuesday, 7th November.
PS4 games playable on PS5 via backward compatibility.
What are these games like, then?
Aliens: Fireteam Elite takes James Cameron’s action-packed sci-fi sequel and morphs it into a co-op shooter, somewhat in the vein of Left 4 Dead. It was a little bit of a mixed bag at launch, with Nic saying in our review, “Aliens: Fireteam Elite has a lack of mission variety, technical issues, bad matchmaking, and a repetitive structure. All of that said, it’s still a fun time. I’m off to play some more right now.”
Mafia II: Definitive Edition, meanwhile, is less exciting. This was the odd one out from the Definitive Edition releases of the Mafia trilogy in 2020, for which the original game had a full remake within the Mafia III engine. Mafia II: Definitive Edition is a mere remaster using the old game engine. It’s still a cult classic open world action game, but that’s still a bit of a duff note. At least it’s not the final game, though.
Dragon Ball: The Breakers takes the long-running anime and manga as inspiration for an asymmetrical multiplayer game in the vein of Dead by Daylight, Evil Dead and plenty others. In our review of Dragon Ball: The Breakers, Miguel said, “Dragon Ball: The Breakers is broken. In their efforts to slap a Dragon Ball coat of paint onto the world of asymmetrical horror-multiplayer action, Bandai Namco has failed to put any care or consideration into the gameplay mechanics that make games like these so fun and enjoyable. Mixed with matchmaking issues and egregious paid gacha mechanics, this is a poor attempt at live-service multiplayer hidden behind the veil of 90s anime nostalgia.”
So… what do you think of this month’s games?
Of course you can! The PlayStation Plus games for October 2023 are available right up until they’re replaced on 7th November, and include the following trio:

What’s the deal with PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium?
The PlayStation Plus relaunch took place back in the middle of 2022, transforming the PS Plus we once knew into a three tiered subscription service that bundles in and expands what was once PlayStation Now. The classic PS Plus is now called PS Plus Essential, giving access to online multiplayer gaming, cloud save backups, exclusive offers and at least 2 free monthly games. PS Plus Extra then adds a catalogue of PS4 and PS5 games into the mix, while PS Plus Deluxe and Premium (depending on your region) adds older PS2, PS1 and PSP game
