Fans of The Last of Us’ popular multiplayer mode, Factions, were waiting for several years for Naughty Dog to deliver its ambitious standalone multiplayer game, but recently, the developer announced that the project had officially been cancelled. In the wake of that announcement, a new screenshot of the game has also emerged.
Though it doesn’t show gameplay, it’s our first (and perhaps only) look at the actual game itself. Showcasing the title’s main menu screen, the image shows a woman sitting on a couch and looking out a window with the menu options shown in the foreground, including tabs for a battle pass, a lobby, an in-game store, and what are referred to as the “study” and the “bunk”. The image was shared on ResetEra by prominent leaker Dusk Golem.
Naughty Dog has said that it cancelled The Last of Us Online because supporting the project would have meant becoming an exclusively live service studio, something it didn’t wish to do. The developer is currently working on multiplayer single player narrative-driven games.

Late last year, Ramen VR announced that they will bring some major changes to Zenith: The Last City. Now, there’s a new devblog breaking down some of the changes and why they’re happening, along with a closed pre-alpha coming this weekend.
As Masahiro Sakurai recently noted in one of his videos, there are video game projects that get canceled all the time. You often don’t hear about it due to how things are in the gaming industry or because they’re canceled so early into production that it “doesn’t matter” to many that they were canceled in the first place. In the case of The Last Of Us Online, however, it’s a different story. Naughty Dog wasn’t just working on the game, it’s been in the works for years! It started out as an expansion of sorts for their second game but soon became its own property that would stand on its own.
After several years in development, Naughty Dog recently confirmed that it has officially ended development on The Last of Us Online, and in the wake of the developer’s cancellation, a number of developers who worked on the project have taken to social media to talk about their experience with the game- and it all seems overwhelmingly positive.
New details on Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League are continuing to be revealed in the lead-up to its launch in February, and while plenty of them are coming through official channels, there’s no shortage of leaks doing the rounds as well.
The fate of The Last of Us Online hung in the balance for a long while, with mixed signals being sent from Sony and Naughty Dog. It all started before the launch of The Last of Us Part II when it was announced that there would be no Factions multiplayer mode like in the original game.
In a new blog published to the game’s official site, Andy Tsen, co-founder of Ramen VR, fully officially discussed the prospects of Zenith: The Last City’s 2.0 version. The blog also acknowledges that alpha playtests will be enacted soon.
Naughty Dog have officially stopped development of The Last Of Us Online, a multiplayer game based on their celebrated McCarthyite (no, not that McCarthy - I mean the novelist) post-apocalyptic action-adventure. Announced in the dusty days of 2018 as a multiplayer mode for The Last Of Us: Part 2, it evolved into a standalone experience with new characters and a new setting, but Sony reportedly scaled the project back earlier this year. Naughty Dog have now formally called it quits, stating that supporting a live service project such as this would have “severely impacted” future single-player game projects. Sony never locked down platforms for The Last Of Us Online, but a PC release was surely on the cards, though I would have expected the game to launch first on PlayStation, as with the original Last Of Us and Uncharted 4.
Following The Last Of Us Online’s cancellation earlier this week, current and former developers from Naughty Dog have emerged to celebrate the mysterious multiplayer project.
The Last of Us Online was announced as a standalone multiplayer title during last year’s Summer Games Fest showcase and in May this year Naughty Dog gave us an update saying the project was still going ahead but they needed more time. They assured fans that the game was still coming.
An image seemingly revealing the main menu of the cancelled The Last of Us multiplayer game been published online.
A new leaked image has released of The Last Of Us Online, that will still be of interest to fans even now that it’s been cancelled.
