The Gran Turismo movie drives a real-life story into gamer cringe territory

Every team behind a book-to-film adaptation has hard choices to make. But one of the trickiest elements is taking a book that’s very much embedded in a character’s head and putting those moments on screen in an interesting way. Voice-overs can only go so far in conveying the way authors capture specific thought patterns.

Not since The Wizard hyped up an entire generation for Super Mario Bros. 3 has a film about video games felt as naked a marketing ploy as Gran Turismo. Based on an improbable true story, the movie follows Jann Mardenborough (Archie Madekwe), a 20-something Gran Turismo fanatic who wins a Nissan-sponsored contest to race professionally. Even more improbable (and this is technically a spoiler, but hell, it's also real life), he manages to hold his own in the racing world. The original story was already a dream marketing win for Nissan and Sony, but now the two companies can milk it once again to bolster the mythology of Gran Turismo. Don't call it a game – it's a driving simulator.

Netflix released the first trailer on Tuesday for The Killer, David Fincher’s latest psychological action thriller starring Michael Fassbender as a methodical and highly trained assassin undergoing a crisis of conscience while on assignment in Paris. The trailer is quintessential Fincher: a fast-cut montage of scenes of Fassbender narrating his gradual psychological breakdown filled with sickly yellow hues and icy turquoise lighting, powered by an ominous, thrumming electronic score by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross.

Back in 2017, Kristen Roupenian’s New Yorker short story about a 20-year-old college student who gets into an unpleasant relationship with an older man turned into a massive social-media sensation. For months, it was the center of buzzy conversations, with readers endlessly debating its intentions and lessons. (And eventually, its origins.) Margot, the student, lets her relationship with 30-something geek Robert go on longer than she wants and become more intimate than she wants, but she doesn’t know how to communicate her own contradictory desires. For his part, Robert, a “shockingly bad” kisser and even worse sexual partner, is huffy, controlling, condescending, and generally unaware of (or uninterested in) her feelings.

How far have you ever gone to show your love of a video game? Many have gone to great lengths to show their passion for gaming titles over the years. Some love to purchase the “Collector’s Editions” of AAA titles to say they have the “premiere goodies” outside of the game. For artists, they love to draw fanart and show off their favorite characters, moments, etc. Nintendo fans are known for buying lots of merch from their favorite franchises, but one Pikmin 4 fan decided to go on a treasure hunt. One that directly reflects the “treasures” you get in the game.

A decade ago, when Sony Pictures first announced its plan to adapt the PlayStation racing sim Gran Turismo into a movie, fans of the franchise were bemused. Two big questions — How? And why? — were quickly answered: The Gran Turismo movie would be based not on the video game, but on the real-life story of a player turned professional racer.

We got to chat with Jann Mardenborough, the “gamer to racer” subject at the heart of the Gran Turismo movie, with topics ranging from his experience in GT Academy to stunt driving for the film about his incredible life.
