The Goldfinger reunites two legends for a Hong Kong take on The Wolf of Wall Street

In 2002, Infernal Affairs paired Hong Kong stars Tony Leung and Andy Lau for a critically acclaimed seedy cop thriller about two moles trying to find each other out. In 2006, Martin Scorsese remade the film as The Departed, winning the director his first (and thus far, only) Academy Award, and beginning a never-ending debate over which movie was better. (Both rule.)
Yet like DeNiro and Pacino, Tony Leung and Andy Lau never appeared together in a film again — until now. Out in December from Niu Vision Media, The Goldfinger will once again bring the two greats together for a crime drama that, ironically, looks a bit like Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street. Which is only fair, after all.
Written and directed by Infernal Affairs co-writer Felix Chong, The Goldfinger is a bit of a reunion behind the camera too. “When a stock market crash causes the sudden collapse of a multi-billion-dollar company,” the official synopsis reads, “an ICAC investigator (Andy Lau) uncovers a criminal conspiracy involving the company’s founder, Ching Yat-yin (Tony Leung) and becomes entangled in a long-running investigation.”
Once again, Lau and Leung are playing two characters in a cat-and-mouse game, and once again, I can’t wait to see how it ends. And thankfully, the wait won’t be very long at all.
The Goldfinger premieres nationwide on Dec. 30.
