Supermassive Games have just released a big update for The Dark Pictures: Switchback VR, improving many visual effects and bettering performance for the PSVR 2 exclusive rollercoaster shooter.
The headline new features are the addition of things like FSR, Foveated Rendering and enabling Temporal Anti-Aliasing, all going toward improving the game resolution in the areas where you’re looking. That’s helped to free up some extra performance headroom so that Supermassive can remove texture “popping” and blurring, as well as enhance lighting, visual effects, decals, models and environmental textures throughout.
Some enemies have now got updated textures as well, but Supermassive has tweaked animations, pathing and improved their hit reactions. Oh, and loading times have been reduced to boot.
There’s a lot that’s new and improved, so the patch is a fairly chunky 8.193 GB on PlayStation 5.
We had a good fun time with the game on its original release earlier this year, and while he noted the visual hitches like pop in, Tuffcub said in our Switchback VR review, “The Dark Pictures: Switchback VR is a really solid PSVR 2 shooter with some fun uses of the headset’s eye tracking and haptics, though it is sadly let down by some annoying technical hitches.”
And what about now? He’s had a quick go of the update and immediately said, “It’s much, much better, it looks and feels much smoother and much more what I would expect a PSVR 2 game to look like.”
