Usually, movies are an escape from a world filled with scary, terrible things, but we all still enjoy the occasional trip into the darkness. Beyond stupid fun, scary movies can also bring people together: You can curl up into your loved one to feel safe, make jokes to alleviate the really intense parts, or laugh together afterward at gross-out moments.
And what better time to get creepy with friends than Halloween? Today's streaming services give us instantaneous access to just about every scary movie ever made. But how do you choose? That's where we come in, with 25 must-sees in the horror genre.

Night of the Living Dead wasn't the first zombie film. But it is the first modern zombie film that defined the undead genre. More than 50 years after its debut, this gritty little flick is still absolutely terrifying. There are any number of remakes, sequels, and similarly titled zombie fare of varying quality—but if you're looking for the best, make sure you choose the 1968 original.
