It’s a big week for video games, with early access to NetherRealm’s Mortal Kombat 1 starting this Friday. One Piece’s live-action series on Netflix is better than almost anyone could have hoped, but the Baratie Arc, introducing Sanji and the swordsmanship of the terrifying Dracule Mihawk, is a particular standout. It’s got it all: great-looking food, plenty of fighting, and huge, silly characters with tons of heart. But these fun few episodes don’t hold a candle to the 27-chapter Baratie Arc in Eiichiro Oda’s original manga.

Over the years, the full scope of the One Piece story has emerged like a never-ending serpentine sea monster. While not the longest manga ever made, it is, by all reasonable measures, an absurdly long story. Creator Eiichiro Oda started publishing the series in 1997 and it’s still getting new chapters to this day. As it stands now, the manga has over 1,000 chapters, and the anime series similarly has over 1,000 episodes. Now, the Netflix live-action adaptation must face this monster of a story and make it its own.

The world of Pokémon media is expanding. A new, live-action Pokémon drama premiering this fall will focus on the impact of the game on a former fan’s life — not on the Pokémon themselves. The show will air in October in Japan, according to a tweet from Japanese TV company Tokyo TV, translated by Pokémon website Serebii.

Warner Bros. Games has dropped the live-action trailer for the next installment to NetherRealm Studios’ best-selling videogame franchise. The video serves as a homage to the iconic ’90s commercial “Mortal Monday,” featuring Guardians of the Galaxy star Dave Bautista, who can be seen amassing people from all walks of life and empowering them to unleash the fight within.

On September 19th, Mortal Kombat 1 will drop, and it will be the dawn of a “new era” for the franchise in more forms than one. The franchise has had a long and complicated road to get here, but NetherRealm Studios has fought hard to keep things alive since they rebooted the franchise in 2011. In that decade-plus, they’ve released three titles, with the fourth coming next month, and it’s breathed new life into the series. The previous entry was the most successful title of the lot by a large margin, and its DLC helped set up the new world we’re about to enter.
