Starfield update 1.9.47 is now available to download for select players. Originally announced last week, this much-anticipated release is described as Starfield's biggest update to date.
The galaxy-hopping RPG has been treated to half a dozen patches in 2023. Yet most of those revisions were fairly minor, while some of the more comprehensive ones failed to perform as advertised, as underlined by the fact that a number of major bugs continued to plague Starfield following its December update.
Bethesda is now looking to turn a new leaf with update 1.9.47, which rolled out to Steam users in beta on January 18, a day later than the Starfield developer planned. In terms of changelog items, the game's first 2024 patch is roughly the size of all of its previous updates combined, packing 123 bug fixes and improvements in total. Graphical improvements, of which there are 40, are the most represented category of changes included in the update. On that note, the patch introduced better support for the most common widescreen aspect ratios: 16:10, 21:9, and 32:9.
35 fixes for quests and random encounters are part of the package as well, as are nearly a dozen improvements targeting spacecraft and ship customization mechanics. The patch also takes another step toward addressing the utterly bizarre Starfield bug that's been causing asteroids to follow players around since the game's release. Specifically, Bethesda found and eliminated yet another possible trigger for this unusual behavior, as per its official changelog. Whether that move finally fixes this bug for good remains to be seen.
In terms of notable gameplay tweaks, Starfield update 1.9.47 makes space combat on New Game Plus runs more difficult. And while that change might sound like a rebalancing move, it's actually just another bug fix. Namely, the changelog attached to the new patch confirms that the previous versions of the game failed to scale space combat difficulty on New Game Plus runs. Ground combat difficulty in such scenarios has already been working as intended, so it remains unchanged.
As was the case with all of the past Starfield patches, the beta version of update 1.9.47 is only available to Steam players. Everyone else will have to remain patient until Bethesda finishes testing this experimental release before they can enjoy its contents. The wait itself likely won't be exceedingly long; most of the game's past updates have gone from beta status to hitting the stable channel in a span of less than two weeks.
