You'll meet many companions and crew members in Starfield. These characters have their own backstories and motivations, as well as skills that help you in your ships and outposts. Our guide discusses Starfield companions, their particular recruitment methods, and if it's possible to romance them.
We've organized our Starfield companions and romance guide into several sections. We tackle the concept of full-fledged companions first, since they're the characters with unique backstories, romance quirks, and quests. This is followed by crew members, both those that are unique, and generic ones that can be recruited.
Note that you can only bring one active follower on your journey, as the previous character has to be dismissed. However, there's a slightly «gamey» way to have an extra active follower. Moreover, since you're likely to recruit a bunch of people, you might as well take note of how to increase ship crew size.
As of the time of this writing, we know of four full-fledged Starfield companions. These characters have an affinity system that eventually unlocks romance options and quests.
So, how exactly does Starfield companion romance work? For those who've played past Bethesda titles, such as Fallout 4, you'll be quite familiar with the mechanics. For newcomers and those looking to brush up on info, here's a quick summary:
Starfield companions and crew members also include some rather generic ones. You can find them lounging around in bars located in cities, such as New Atlantis, Akila City, Neon, and Cydonia.
These NPCs simply have a job title, such as Fusion Systems Specialist or Outpost Security Chief. This also denotes their only skill. They also have recruitment fees that you need to pay before they join, but you can succeed in the Persuasion minigame to lower the amount.
That's everything you need to know about crew members and companions in Starfield. Since you're already checking out the people that you'll meet in your journey, you might as well take note of the rival factions in the game.

Purchase your perfect Starfield home to customize it with decorations or useful functions like workbenches and storage. Starfield gives you access to multiple player homes you can purchase through vendors or that you can earn by completing quests. You can even build your own home, but to do that, you’ll need to learn how to construct outposts. That’s a lot of work. If you want to skip building, you can get a home instantly and start sleeping with these different player home locations. Every major settlement has at least two homes you can unlock. Here’s where to find them all.
Starfield gives its players a lot of stealth tools and one player has used them all to make the game play like Dishonored. By combining the best powers, weapons, skills, and armor, this player has made Starfield look like Dishonored in space.
There are a ton of things for you to do in Starfield, most of which don’t have much to do with the story. In the spirit of creating your adventure, Bethesda Softworks has made the game as immersive as possible, and this by letting you do most things you can think of…well most things. Much like Skyrim or even the older Morrowind, you can do some whacky and downright funny things such as putting a bucket on an NPC. However, the following is a little more intense and more brutal. The best part is that you might not get in trouble for it. The following PSA is that there is a way to knock out and kill NPCs in Starfield with a box — legally speaking. If you want to know how to do such a thing, follow along.
You can earn cash in Starfield by selling your contraband and stolen items.
Making money, or credits, in Starfield can take a lot of time if you don't take advantage of some of Starfield's more disreputable activities. The easiest of these is finding and selling contraband. As far as we've seen possession of these yellow-marked items has no impact on companion relationships, and unless it's a UC or Freestar Collective scanner, no one really cares if you have it.
For one Starfield modder, every short animation of your ship landing and departing from planets that you're forced to watch is time you could've spent actually playing the game. So, they cut out every transitional space travel scene to please all the players who are tired of seeing them every time you want to travel somewhere new.
Bethesda's most prolific voice actor has returned for Starfield, and players have already found their in-game character.
Unleash the true power of Console Commands in Starfield with our huge list of codes and Item IDs. This list covers all the weapons, armor, aid items and more. Earth, Mars, Luna, and more familiar celestial bodies are present in Starfield and can be freely explored. That said, Earth isn’t in the same state as we know it today, as only a few of humanity’s greatest monuments have stood the test of time.
The creator of Stardew Valley has shared a screenshot from his upcoming game Haunted Chocolatier, and it features yet another old man lying in bed.
Your friendly companion Vasco isn’t just a gun-toting helper in Starfield, he can also speak your in-game name. Vasco is programmed to speak hundreds of names — with a special focus on famous explorers and astronauts. You’ll even find some extremely NSFW options that feel more at home in the Fallout series. Not that surprising, seeing as this fun feature comes straight from the robot butler in Fallout 4. Pick one of these names — which you can even change when customizing your character again — and Vasco can actually speak it. Everyone’s favorite robot buddy has some pretty rude and surprising options, so check them all out below.
