Star Trek’s hysterical retro shorts need to become a real show

One of the main new systems that Bethesda Game Studios had to implement in Starfield was ship combat. Speaking with Insomniac Games CEO Ted Price in the latest episode of The AIAS Game Maker's Notebook Podcast, Game Director Todd Howard discussed the influences (FTL and early MechWarrior games) and revealed that the studio had to make the AI 'really stupid' to get ship combat to be fun for everyone.

Some new evidence has suggested that the remake could be in real trouble. The Embracer Group and Aspyr Media, the developer behind many ports — including the original on Nintendo Switch — announced the PS5 console exclusive remake as part of the September 2021 PlayStation Showcase. However, it has had a somewhat turbulent development since, with Aspyr's parent company, Saber Interactive, taking over development last year.

Speaking with Collider, writer Lindsey Anderson Beer finally clarified the current status of the long-in-development fourth installment to the J.J. Abrams-produced Star Trek film franchise. Despite its suffering from delays, Beer confirmed that the highly-anticipated project is still moving forward at Paramount Pictures.

In a very strange but very predictable move, Netflix has made a reality show version of the demented challenges from its 2021 breakout hit Squid Game. In the years since the series’ debut, plenty of content creators like MrBeast have organized their own real-life Squid Game, but Netflix is finally back with a trailer for its official version, called Squid Game: The Challenge, which boasts what Netflix says is the biggest reality show prize of all time: $4.56 million. Squid Game: The Challenge is set to premiere on Nov. 22.

Cyberpunk 2077's Phantom Liberty expansion is attracting very positive reviews, and CD Projekt staff are naturally quite pleased about this. And also, very relieved. Released in 2020, the original Cyberpunk 2077 stands as an uncommonly thunderous example of overhype and project mismanagement, with technical issues at launch that extended from comical bugs such as disappearing penises to serious breaches such as graphical effects capable of triggering epileptic fits. CD Projekt have spent years attempting to address the underlying systemic and workplace issues and claw back some goodwill - hence, the general atmosphere on Xitter of developers needing to take five and stare at a flowerbed for a while. "It was a rough few years but there's finally celebration and closure (for me at least)," posted senior level designer Seb Mcbride.

The sky is far from the limit in Starfield as you can while away hundreds of hours exploring the RPG's vast array of planets and systems. Or you can ignore all that and sink that time into designing and constructing a massive outpost instead, which is just what Starfield player Hackoox did and judging by the outcome, it was certainly time well spent.

While Bethesda Game Studios confirmed that the official Starfield modding tools won't be released before 2024, modders continue their sacred work to improve the game in various aspects.

By utilizing a quirk of Starfield enemy AI, players have discovered a secret method to make your ship completely immune to all damage — and it isn’t an exploit or a cheat. We’re not glitching the game. We’re just using the AI’s tendencies against them. By building your ship in a very weird way, players are making it so enemy ships can’t hit them. Seriously.

There’s an old joke about 4X games that goes something like this: after you spend several hours on YouTube watching tutorials, you get to fumble your way through a playthrough with a vague idea of what you’re doing before you inevitably make some fatal mistake you don’t recognize until much, much later. Then you restart and do a little better. Star Trek: Infinite isn’t interested in re-inventing the galactic wheel - this is a 4X game’s 4X game - but it does do a good job of bringing Trek into the space that publisher Paradox Interactive has boldly charted over the years.
