For just about as long as I can remember, products from The Army Painter have been judged a bit hit-or-miss by those in the painting community. Some colors were just okay, while others were best avoided entirely. All that’s changed over the past few years, however. Now, the Denmark-based company is a competitor in the space once again. Both of its two new lines of paint give industry leader Games Workshop a run for its money, and the newest is available to the public this week for the very first time.

LittleBigPlanet 3’s servers have been offline since January, leaving players unable to access player-created levels stored in the game’s archive. On Friday, developer Sumo Digital and publisher Sony Interactive Entertainment announced the servers will stay offline indefinitely “due to ongoing technical issues.”

There is arguably no more idiosyncratic descriptor in the entirety of gaming than “Metroidvania.”

Jesse Plemons is a brilliant actor. He’s also one of our most memeable stars. It’s not that he’s super expressive — quite the opposite, in fact. His stillness, his pauses, and his plain, unvarnished way of speaking act as a gravitational force, drawing the camera and other actors into his orbit. He’s also, in a low-key way, extremely funny.

Kaiju No. 8, the new sci-fi action anime based on Naoya Matsumoto’s ongoing Shōnen Jump Plus manga, premiered its first episode last Saturday.

On April 15, Discord’s new Terms of Service changes went into effect, and there’s one major addition: an arbitration clause. What does it mean for users? Last December’s Rebel Moon Part One: A Child of Firewas a paint-by-numbers space opera filled in with Zack Snyder’s maximalist colors. Pitched as “Seven Samurai but make it Star Wars” (literally, to Lucasfilm), the finished product was at best a violent B-movie mashup and at worst an expensive Asylum-esque mockbuster. Not a great movie, but a little promising? Its most glaring omission: an ending. After two hours of hero Kora (Sofia Boutella) wrangling a crew to defend a farming planet from Imperium forces, the showdown didn’t actually go down; Snyder held on to the payoff for Part Two: The Scargiver.

Earth Day is April 22, and to commemorate the occasion, you can currently save on a variety of documentaries from the BBC’s Planet Earth collection in 4K UHD format at Amazon. Even if you’ve already seen some of these films, streaming service resolution can’t compare to the visuals on a physical disc. While this isn’t a comprehensive collection of nature documentaries produced by the BBC, it is an excellent opportunity to explore the majesty of our little blue marble without leaving the safety of your living room.

In RimWorld, you play as crash-landed survivors who have to eke out a new existence on a hostile planet, surviving and perhaps thriving between raider attacks, AI uprisings, and swarms of hostile insects. The game has a handful of expansions with new events, and the latest, Anomaly, is the scariest one yet. If you only have the spare scratch to pick up one RimWorld expansion, Anomaly is by far your best choice.

The Fallout TV show isn’t particularly beautiful – at least, not like a bride is supposed to be. Its characters spend most of their time trudging through the irradiated grime of derelict California, avoiding pools of who-knows-what and drinking animal piss if they really need to. It’s a tough reality to witness, but that’s what makes the Prime Video game adaptation’s violent first episode so critical; its bloodbath wedding welcomes viewers to Fallout’s no-nonsense approach to love and desperation. To do it effectively, Fallout mines the ancient trope for every last perversion.

Hades 2 is still in the early stages of testing, but the game looks good. Like, really good.

The long gestating Yuri!!! on Ice movie has officially been canceled. The movie was announced back in 2017, though news on the production front has been scant since. After a short teaser in 2018 and a note in 2020, the production team finally announced the cancelation on X this Friday.

Netflix announced today that Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri will return for a fifth season of The Witcher — and that the show’s fifth season will be its last. Season 5 will be filmed back-to-back with season 4, which has just started production.

Niantic Labs released a Pokémon Go update on Wednesday that claimed to make trainers look “even more” like the players themselves — and players are now starting to see that comment as a roast. That’s because a loud group of players on social media thinks the update made trainers “ugly.” And, uh, yeah… there’s something off about the new trainer avatars.

With the Hades 2 technical test underway, we’re asking this question: How are the Greek gods of the game even hotter than in the original, Hades? Regardless of the answer, there are lots of new characters being added to the franchise’s lore, like Hephaestus, the god of the forge. Hephaestus is special because he plays a role in most other gods’ stories — he’s the one who crafted their powerful weapons, like Athena’s spear or Zeus’ lightning bolt. He’s also one of the few Greek gods who isn’t “perfect;” it’s said he was thrown from Mt. Olympus because of his appearance, and he was injured on the fall. He’s often depicted with a disability impacting his legs.

“Creepy, scary, sad, and squelchy” aren’t words that seem to go well with “cozy fantasy,” “sapphic romance,” or “dark comedy.” But Nebula and Locus award-winner John Wiswell blends all those elements into his debut novel, Someone You Can Build a Nest In. One of Polygon’s most anticipated science fiction/fantasy novels of 2024, the book, now on shelves, centers on a shape-shifting monster. Shesheshen haunts her local town, Underlook, until she connects with a human woman whose gentleness surprises her. Smitten, Shesheshen plans to show her love by implanting parasitic eggs in her crush object.

Vampires are some of our most malleable monsters. They can be lonely kids, lonely teens, misunderstood lovers, mass murderers, leather-clad drifters, regular dudes, or just about anything in between. All that flexibility (and the ability, often, to pass as human) means vampires can also come as a complete surprise to both audiences and the characters in the movies themselves, waiting until more than halfway through a movie before they really sink their teeth in. That special and narrow niche of surprise vampire movies, like From Dusk Till Dawnor A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night, is the exact landing point for Abigail, the hilarious new action-horror movie from the directors of Ready or Not.

Paizo, fresh off a highly-anticipated refresh of Pathfinder’s 2nd edition ruleset, announced some big moves for the game’s ongoing narrative on Tuesday. The War of Immortals meta-event will kill a god, span multiple rulebooks, and restart the publisher’s line of hardcover novels. It will also introduce the first two original classes built following the company’s formal departure from the legacy Dungeons & Dragons ruleset and the OGL.

M. Night Shyamalan has long been known for his twists, but those twists are normally reserved for the ends of his movies, not the trailers. But it seems like he’s branching out into unexplored territory with his new thriller Trap, which has a first trailer that feels worthy of the Shyamalan name.

John Wiswell’s debut novel Someone You Can Build a Nest In was one of Polygon’s most anticipated SFF novels of 2024, and it lived up to that title. It’s an energetic, deeply strange, surprising book whose protagonist, a monster named Shesheshen, strongly reminded me of one of the decade’s most popular SFF protagonists, Martha Wells’ Murderbot. Like Murderbot, Shesheshen is a nonhuman character who struggles to understand human emotion and behavior, and is frustrated and even repelled when she starts experiencing it herself. They share a certain outlook — a loneliness they can’t acknowledge, and an attachment to one human in particular.

In a year already stuffed with terrific games, Children of the Sun stands out as something truly special. Developed by René Rother, the psychedelic puzzle-shooter plays like a spiritual mashup of Sniper Elite and Superhot by way of the anarchic noise rock sensibilities of Suda51, dropping players in the role of a vengeful masked assassin on a one-woman warpath across a surreal version of the American South to kill the leader of an army of cultists.

Months after release, Cities: Skylines 2developers Colossal Order and publisher Paradox Interactive have issued an apology over the poor state of the game and its recent DLC, Beach Properties, along with the lack of updates to address player concerns about performance and the lack of content.

Baldur’s Gate 3 took the gaming world by storm in 2023. With a dense, resonant story populated by complex and lovable characters, frankly unbelievable player freedom, and a low barrier to entry whether you were familiar with the franchise or not, Larian Studios proved that there’s still a huge, hungry audience for the massive single-player adventure role-playing game.

Typically, the live viewership for Critical Role dips after its break around midnight Eastern, as a good chunk of the audience heads to bed with plans to catch the rest of the Dungeons & Dragons actual-play episode later on. But last week’s session was so suspenseful that viewer numbers continued to climb until the very end. The marathon five-hour broadcast was must-watch TV for dedicated fans thanks to the return of a past adversary and a bold player move that felt as if it had been pulled from a different game entirely — because it was.

Streaming is taking yet another step toward cable. Just weeks after combining its Hulu and Disney Plus services, Disney Plus is adding streaming channels, according to a report from The Information. This marks the latest push toward the old model of TV-watching from one of the world’s biggest streaming companies, and while that may sound like a step backwards, it’s probably a good thing in the long run.

The animated origin story of Autobot leader Optimus Prime and his Decepticon rival Megatron will come to the big screen this September in Transformers One, with Chris Hemsworth and Brian Tyree Henry voicing the friends turned enemies. The first trailer for Transformers One sets the tone for the Cybertron-set adventure, with Prime (then known as Orion Pax) and Megatron being pretty chummy in a buddy comedy kind of way.

Thinking about Dragon’s Dogma 2’s interestingly scrappy combat recently took me back to another time when a major role-playing game series tried something very different with its combat mechanics. In this case, the designers’ goal was the same as Capcom’s with the first Dragon’s Dogma: a single-player RPG that felt like a massively multiplayer online game to play. But the resulting system couldn’t have been more different, and stands as one of the most fascinating dead ends in game design history.

Supergiant Games’ modern classic roguelike, Hades, is getting a sequel. Following a surprise announcement at the 2022 Game Awards, Hades 2’s early access launch is getting close. The game promises to take players beyond the Underworld in the company of a new heroine, Melinoë.

The first episode of Fallout, the new streaming series on Amazon, felt a lot like the beginning of Fallout 3 for me — and not in the good way. Swapping out Liam Neeson for Kyle MacLachlan felt like a downgrade going in, but that’s probably because I’m just not a fan of his “subtle dread and kind smile” schtick. Just as in Bethesda’s 2008 sequel, life inside the Vault felt pretty bland, but things really started to open up for me in episode 2, when we finally arrived in the Wasteland.

The Battletech fiction collection includes a comprehensive collection of every Battletech Legends novel published since 2015, in addition to back issues of Shrapnel, the official Battletech magazine, which feature collections of technical readouts and short stories.

The technical test for Hades 2has barely begun, but first-looks at the game have already set feeds on fire. Supergiant Games released a version of the game to a limited number of players on Wednesday. But instead of keeping details of those playthroughs under wraps, the developers busted the doors to its mythical underworld wide open and streamed roughly three hours of gameplay on its official YouTube channel. Now, everyone has gotten their first big look at the game and social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter) have become the worshipping grounds for all of the game’s sexy Greek gods.

Sega’s arcade hack-and-slash beat-’em-up Golden Axe is being adapted for television. In something of an unexpected twist, that TV series will be an animated comedy. Mike McMahan (Star Trek: Lower Decks, Solar Opposites) and Joe Chandler (American Dad!) will co-write the first episode and executive produce the 10-episode series, Comedy Central announced Wednesday. The announcement came two days after Paramount revealed that season 5 of Lower Decks would be the series’ final installment.

In the galaxy of Warhammer 40,000, the Imperium of Man is built off the backs of transhuman soldiers. There are the iconic Space Marines, who are gene-crafted and mass produced by the Emperor of Mankind, but when you need something a little more specialized, you might turn to the Adeptus Custodes. This group stands 10,000 strong, and each is a work of art. These philosopher warriors serve as the personal guards and agents of the Emperor, even in his currently skeletal state.

Following a two-month delay, Homeworld 3 is ready to launch on May 13, but you can play the game three days early with its epic Collector’s Edition. The Collector’s Edition has been available to pre-order for some time, and we recently got a detailed look at the minis and other items featured in its $174.99 release, which you can currently pre-order from Amazon, Target, and GameStop.

Lionsgate Television announced on Wednesday that the studio is set to produce an English-language television adaptation of Park-chan Wook’s 2003 thriller Oldboy. The movie, one of the most mesmerizing, memorable dark action movies of the 2000s, started a new wave of Korean action cinema when it was first released. It’s since spawned endless copycats and homages — particularly its grim, bloody single-take hammer-in-a-hallway fight sequence, which filmmakers still frequently cite as an inspiration for their own battle scenes in constricted spaces. A 4K restoration was released in American theaters in 2023, and came in second at the box office in its first week, beaten only by Barbie. Spike Lee remade the movie as an English-language thriller in 2013, but it’s never been adapted for television before.

Dwarf Fortress is many things. Most fans of PC gaming know it as a byzantine simulation of a colony of dwarves. Look closer, however, and you’ll also find that it’s a byzantine simulation of geologic forces, weather systems, and tidal movements; language, psychology, and poetry; medieval combat, of course, and even siegecraft. But the reason that I love the game so much is that it also simulates its own history, with tales of epic heroes and powerful artifacts strewn all across its procedurally generated digital worlds. Starting Wednesday, those histories will be more accessible than ever before.

Over the last decade, there’s been a glut of sci-fi and fantasy series on television and streaming. With peak Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon, The Wheel of Time, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, The Expanse, The Witcher, Silo, Foundation, and more, keeping up with the deluge, and discerning which ones are worth your time, is daunting. But there’s a very simple trick to determining whether or not one of these shows is good, and it’s all about the costumes.

Open up Botany Manor for the first time, and you’re immediately struck by, for lack of a better term, an overwhelmingly cozy vibe. This game oozes positivity and brightness; your ears get hit with what sounds like white noise, with a calming harp mixed in with the sounds of birds chirping and water running. The world around you is incredibly vivid, with intense, saturated colors for the trees and plants and soft-looking grass that crunches slightly under your feet as you walk. If you’re looking for a game that’s the definition of “cozy,” this would be toward the top of that list.

The penultimate episode of Shōgun is a big one, in the way only great TV can build to.It binds together everything the past eight hours of the show has built, then punctures the plotlines like daisy chains. And the result is explosive, even before the final moments blow up everything we understand about where this story might be headed. Episode 9, “Crimson Sky,” brings the whole conflict to a fiery head — so it’s no wonder it prominently features the plotline the show’s creators, by their own admission, struggled with the most.

Taylor Stewart and Andy Grush have been scoring movies together as the Newton Brothers for 15 years. They’ve worked with contemporary greats like Hans Zimmer and Danny Elfman, they composed the scores for Five Nights at Freddy’s and The Fall of the House of Usher, and they just spent who knows how long marinating in the music of X-Men: The Animated Series in order to craft the music for its sequel, X-Men ’97.

Knuckles, Paramount Plus’ episodic spinoff of the Sonic movies, is gliding under the radar. Between Fallout commanding all of the video-games-can-actually-make-for-good-TV discourse and news that Keanu Reeves will voice Shadow in the third Sonic movie due out in December, it would be easy for even the most dedicated Sega buff to forget that an entire six-episode series starring the Master Emerald guardian is dropping next week.

Nintendo’s latest Indie World showcase featured more than a dozen indie games coming to Nintendo Switch in 2024, with some of those titles dropping on the eShop today.

Sayonara Wild Hearts developer Simogo announced a release date for its next game, Lorelei and the Laser Eyes, during Nintendo’s Indie World showcase on Wednesday. It’s set to hit Nintendo Switch and Windows PC on May 16.

Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree will send players on a new journey this summer to the Land of Shadow, where they will learn more about one of the game’s most mysterious demigods, Miquella of the Haligtree.

GameStop is currently offering a buy two, get one free sale on its entire catalog of pre-owned titles. Add three eligible games to your cart, and the cheapest one will be free. The pre-owned prices on most of these games aren’t much lower than what you’d pay for a new copy, but the inclusion of a free game and plenty of new releases to choose from makes this worth checking out.

Super fans of Hades will soon get their first chance to get their hands on an early version of the game’s sequel soon. According to the recent update from the developer Supergiant Games, the team is “close” to launchingHades 2 in early access, but before it does, the game will have its first “technical test.” The team didn’t specify how long the technical tests will run, but we know they will “begin shortly,” via X on Tuesday.

RollerCoaster Tycoon Classic, the park management sim that turned us all into greedy, and occasionally sadistic capitalists, is currently on sale for its lowest price ever on Steam. Normally $19.99, this title is discounted to just $4.99 through April 22 to celebrate the game’s 25th anniversary.

Overwatch 2 season 10 is now live, with a few important changes to how Blizzard is monetizing the game. Most notably, the hero shooter’s new hero Venture is free for all players, and no longer locked behind the battle pass. Overwatch 2’s battle pass now also pays out multiple kinds of currency, including the premium paid currency known as Overwatch Coins and a new type of currency called Mythic Prisms, which players can spend on mythic-tier skins.

Pixar’s Inside Out left a twofold legacy in the animation world. Some people think of it as a poignant movie about the necessity of sadness that turned abstract psychological theories into whimsical set-pieces and a resonant storyline. But a certain subsection of the internet decided that Riley’s dad (voiced by Kyle MacLachlan) is actually a hot daddy.

Take-Two Interactive Software is in an Ohio court this week to fight a lawsuit over the use of Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James’ tattoos in its games. Tattoo artist Jimmy Hayden first sued Take-Two in 2017 over the use of several tattoos he made for James that were reproduced in NBA 2K games from 2016 to 2020.

If you’re one of the millions of fans of the Australian kids’ animated series Bluey, you’ll be aware that the show’s third season, which began airing in early 2021 in Australia, just concluded with an epic 28-minute special episode called “The Sign.” (Episodes are usually seven minutes long.) You’ll also be aware that the episode, and the lead-in to it, sent Bluey fandom into a tailspin of speculation that this was the end for the beloved show.

It’s not often that a sequel really impresses us, but Dune: Part Two is one of our favorite movies of 2024. While there’s still ample opportunity to see this sci-fi blockbuster on the big screen (in fact, IMAX will extend Dune: Part Two showings starting this week), anyone who would prefer to see the second installment of the Dune saga at home can now purchase the movie digitally.

Pixar’s 2015 movie Inside Outextended the studio’s proven story formula to its logical end point by asking the question What if emotions had emotions? The result is a poignant, whimsical adventure that delves into the mind of an 11-year-old girl grappling with some big life changes. The sequel, Inside Out 2, picks up a year or so after the first movie — and introduces new emotions as characters, which has raised a lot of questions for Pixar fans. During a press visit to the Pixar campus, we got a first look atInside Out 2, and got to talk to the filmmakers about creating a teenager’s emotional landscape.

Over the last decade, Wizards of the Coast has rolled out a series of elaborate campaign books for 5th edition Dungeons & Dragons, each one customized for low-to-mid-level characters. At most, those products have topped out at around level 13, leaving fans to make their own way toward the game’s level 20 cap.

It’s the best time of the year: The Stanley Cup playoffs begin in just a few days. When you’re not watching hockey, you could also be playing hockey with EA Sports NHL 24, which has just been added to the Xbox Game Pass lineup. EA Sports NHL 24 is coming to console subscribers on April 18, just two days before the playoffs begin.

With Marvel’s Daredevil: Born Again wrapping up production, one fuzzy unknown is the future of another character in the street-level saga’s orbit: Echo. Alaqua Cox tells Polygon she is in the dark, too; unlike some of her peers who got their start on Disney Plus shows, Marvel hasn’t mentioned to the 27-year-old actor when or if Maya Lopez will reappear in the MCU.

Nintendo will broadcast a new Indie World presentation on Wednesday, April 17, a showcase that promises “roughly 20 minutes of announcements and updates on indie games headed to Nintendo Switch in 2024,” the company said in an announcement Tuesday.

When Sega dubbed 2024 the year of Shadow the Hedgehog, the company really wasn’t kidding. Now, it’s looking like beloved actor Keanu Reeves may be the voice of Sonic’s rival in the Sonic 3 movie. The casting was confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter on Monday, citing multiple anonymous sources.

Zuko’s story in Avatar: The Last Airbendershowed that honor wasn’t something another person could give you. True honor comes from living a life that feels honest to yourself and your values. In the show, Zuko restores his sense of self by teaming up with Avatar Aang and overthrowing his evil warlord father.

Pepper Grinderdoesn’t need any words. There’s no need for dialogue or instructions because what this game entails is all in the name. Shipwrecked and with her treasure stolen, Pepper’s objective is clear: Grind — literally — her way through a pirate-plagued world to get back her prize.

Steam’s annual FPS Fest sale is in full effect through April 22, offering some excellent deals on an impressive collection of shooters. While events like this don’t offer discounts on the Steam Deck, it's still an excellent opportunity to stock up on shooters that may have otherwise slipped under your radar. In the hours leading up to several gaming news events — like an indie event or a Nintendo Direct — you can see the rumblings of people online discussing a game called Hollow Knight: Silksong. Some share digital summoning circles constructed with emojis and dedicate them to the game in the hopes it will make an appearance at a showcase; others simply express their excitement by sharing memes prior to the event. During a digital event itself, you’ll see viewers spam the live chat with messages like “SKONG [with four airhorn emojis],” or “WHERE SILKSONG????!!??” Sometimes, the phrase “Silksong” will even trend online before one of these events because so many people are sharing their excitement.

American comedy has strayed from the light of its ancestors. Gone are the days of Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton, and the Marx Brothers, when jokes and visual surprises flew at a mile a minute and were matched by the cinematic creativity and physical daring of the auteurs behind them.

As expected following the launch of the highly-anticipated Fallout TV series on Amazon Prime, there has been an uptick of people playing the Fallout games. However, people aren’t just going for the newest game in the series. Fallout 76. Fallout 4, which released in 2015, and even the very first Fallout have seen relatively huge jumps in player count on Steam.

Season 10 of Overwatch 2 will be a big one for Blizzard’s free-to-play shooter. It will introduce a new hero in Venture, a new damage-class addition to the roster, and the first taste of a brand-new game mode, Clash. We’re also getting a very evil-looking Mercy.

Netflix’s new animated movie Thelma the Unicorn isn’t exactly about a unicorn. It’s actually about a barn pony masquerading as a unicorn, once she realizes that the pink glittery glitz could be her one chance at superstardom.

The current season of Game Changer, Dropout’s endlessly inventive improv/prank game show, delivered its first real banger of a game in last week’s “Bingo.” Earlier episodes of the season were all charming new games or beloved returning formats in their own right, but “Bingo” stands apart thanks to a twist of the exact kind that makes up Game Changer’s metatextual bread and butter.

It seems like the perfect concept: Dimension 20’s Unsleeping City, an actual play Dungeons & Dragons campaign about the secret magical underbelly of New York City, played live in front of a paying audience at the Big Apple’s hall of halls, Madison Square Garden, for one epic night of adventure — an event dubbed “Gauntlet at the Garden.”

Even though Alex Garland’s near-future catastrophe movie Civil War takes place during an American insurrection aimed at forcing an autocratic, democracy-destroying president out of power, it focuses more on the journalists covering the war than on who’s fighting who. That, Garland tells Polygon, was a choice he made because he wanted the story to be about why reporters are a critical part of a functioning society. That same agenda also shaped the look of Civil War: The movie is largely seen through the eyes of two photojournalists, veteran Lee Miller (Kirsten Dunst) and cub reporter Jessie (Cailee Spaeny). Their intent focus on capturing the perfect image made it important for Civil War to be visually striking.
