Sonic Superstars has added a brand-new DLC costume based on Shadow the Hedgehog, which is available for fans to download now. Sonic Superstars has been getting post-launch DLC support after its initial October 2023 release, with players getting free DLC outfits for its playable characters. This newest costume for Sonic is based on Sonic x Shadow Generations, an upcoming Sonic game that will be released in fall 2024.
Sonic x Shadow Generations is a remaster of the 2011 original, re-releasing the old title on brand-new platforms after initially only launching on the PS3 and Xbox 360. This remaster includes updated graphics and 60 FPS across all platforms. On top of that, Sonic's anti-hero rival, Shadow the Hedgehog, is starring in a brand-new story campaign that sees him confronting past foes, like Black Doom and the Biolizard. In celebration of Sonic x Shadow Generations' reveal, Sonic Superstars players can get a costume based on Shadow for free.
This new Sonic Superstars costume can only be worn by Sonic, making him look like the iconic red-and-black hedgehog. This costume doesn't change Sonic's appearance completely, as the costume only puts Sonic in a hoodie or PJs that make him look like Shadow. This costume includes Shadow's raised spines, inhibitor rings, and air shoes. Fans were given a heads-up last December, as a previous Sonic Superstars leak pointed to this Shadow costume early, along with a waitress costume for Amy that was called «iHop Amy.»
Since this is only a cosmetic costume instead of a full character swap, Sonic's animations stay relatively the same as they appeared in the base game. The things that have changed in this costume would be Sonic's appearance during these animations, where Sonic's spinball jump more resembles Shadow's and his running wheel animation incorporates Shadow's air shoes. Many fans have gotten a bit of a laugh seeing how Sonic looked in this costume, especially with how he tries to replicate his rival's stoic scowl. Others wish that Sega had committed to making Shadow playable in Sonic Superstars instead of just a costume, even if it wouldn't make sense timeline-wise.
While Shadow the Hedgehog isn't a fully playable character in SonicSuperstars, the character is getting a lot of love from Sega this year. Shadow being given the spotlight is warranted, as not only will he be a playable character in Sonic x Shadow Generations, he'll be debuting as the antagonist of the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog 3, which will premiere on December 20, 2024. Fans are eagerly anticipating to see how Sonic x Shadow Generations will retell the iconic character's story, as he revisits his roots and confronts his past demons.

On top of that, this leak has supposedly stated that the game will support up to 32 players in its multiplayer mode. Sega executives have suggested that competition with Super Mario Bros. Wonder hurt the sales of Sonic Superstars when it was first released. The latest 2D iteration of the classic franchise, featuring a speedy hedgehog, was launched last year to average reviews and notably poor sales. Sonic Superstars managed to replicate much of the old-school gameplay of the series but seemingly failed to wow critics or fans, and this translated to a disappointing launch.
Sonic Superstars released in October last year, delivering the first new sidescrolling game in the series since Sonic Mania, though it hasn’t performed the way Sega would have expected it to. Shotly after the game’s release, the company revealed that the game had seen “a slightly weaker start than anticipated”, attributing that partly to the fact that the game had released in a particularly busy period that also saw the release of the likes of Super Mario Bros. Wonder, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Alan Wake 2, and many others.
