The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is like the gift that keeps on giving, at least on PC, thanks to the seemingly unending support of skilled modders. One of them is undoubtedly 'doodlez', who made a ton of excellent Skyrim mods, such as the Light Limit fix that introduced unlimited dynamic light sources to the 2011 open world RPG.
Over the past week, doodlez has released several graphics mods that augment the visuals of the aging game in a number of ways. The most impressive of the bunch is arguably the realistic rain and weather effects mod, which is actually a collaboration between three modders (including doodlez).
The small team claims to have added a physically modeled rain system that tracks precipitation, runoff, and evaporation depending on the weather. Rainwater will build up gradually and stick around after the weather changes, mimicking the real world. Once it has rained for enough time, puddles will form and stick around for a while after the rain has stopped. They'll eventually evaporate based on the weather. Shores near lakes, rivers, and seas will also appear appropriately wet.
This Skyrim mod takes advantage of dynamic cubemap reflections from another of doodlez's new mods, Dynamic Cubemaps, which improves reflections across the game and even adds fresnel as an efficient specular global illumination system. There's an optional separate mod to enable Dynamic Cubemaps for metal armor, too.
Another Skyrim mod implements subsurface scattering in Bethesda's game to greatly improve the look of character skin. According to doodlez, the mod is compatible with every skin and body modification. Furthermore, the profile is configurable from within the game.
The other two mods released by doodlez are focused on improving water bodies. The Parallax effect is added to water surfaces to improve their details, while Caustics result from light rays reflecting or refracting from a curved surface. Doodlez noted that calm water would have different Caustics from rapids' water.
Do note that all these mods require the installation of the Community Shaders mod.

During CD Projekt RED's annual earnings call, The Witcher 4 (codenamed Polaris) came up several times, albeit as no surprise. New Joint CEO Michał Nowakowski told investors (and any fans that might be listening, of course) that they can expect The Witcher 4 to go beyond simply retreading the massive success of the third installment thanks to the addition of new gameplay features and mechanics.
Dragon's Dogma 2 launched around ten days ago, earning a favorable reception from critics (I gave it an 8/10 in my review) but not equally enthusiastic from fans, especially on Steam. That was largely due to the microtransactions and technical performance, but there are other minor issues that PC users can easily fix with the help of mods.
Following the sales of Saber Interactive (to a new company founded by Saber CEO Matthew Karch) and Gearbox Software (to Take-Two), the Embracer Group held an investors call to confirm the end of its dreaded restructuring program.
We knew Gearbox Software was about to be sold by Embracer, and today, Take-Two announced it had reached an agreement to purchase the 25-year-old Texan developer for $460 million.
Today is the day that Diablo IV gets its ray tracing update, which was developed in collaboration with NVIDIA. Blizzard has released a detailed explanation of each improved effect, starting with shadows.
As I mentioned in my Dragon's Dogma 2 review, despite the announcement of NVIDIA DLSS 3 being available at launch, NVIDIA's frame generation technique is nowhere to be found.
During a lengthy developer update livestream, Grinding Gear Games announced some Path of Exile 2 news. To start with, the studio based in New Zealand announced a delay in the beta test that was previously slated for June. While the content is in place, the team disclosed the need for more time to properly polish Path of Exile 2. As such, the beta test will now take place at some point in late 2024. However, it's not just bad news, as an Alpha test will still be conducted in June.
