The release date for Senua’s Sega: Hellblade 2 has finally been announced.
Ninja Theory and studio owner Microsoft first announced Hellblade 2 at The Game Awards in December 2019, but in the four years that have since passed a release date has never been given.
However, during the Xbox and Bethesda Developer Direct presentation held today, it was officially confirmed that the game is set to be released on May 21.
In a new video shown during today’s Microsoft and Bethesda Developer DirectStudio head Dom Matthews said the game was “in the final months of development”.
Melina Juergens, who plays Senua in the game, also explained the game’s plot in the new video.
“[Senua] wants to stop the Vikings who raided her village right at thgeir source in Iceland,” she said. “But not just the quest has changed – Senua herself has grown since the first Hellblade. She’s made peace with her past and is no longer in such fear of her visions and voices.”
“Hellblade was very special for us and we didn’t want to do a straight sequel, we wanted to do something extra special, and so we’re making our lives as difficult as possible in that pursuit,” Ninja Theory co-founder Tameem Antoniades said in a behind the scenes video released in June 2021.
“The game is set in ninth century Iceland, so we’ve been sending our art and audio teams out there doing photography, photogrammetry and combining it with satellite data to recreate large swathes of the landscape.”

Given how impressive Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice was, it seemed inevitable that there would be a sequel. The game, despite being made independently by Ninja Theory, blew even the highest-budget games on the market out of the water in terms of graphical fidelity and storytelling. Microsoft realized this potential as well and purchased the studio to provide a bigger budget to the team for the eventual sequel and to secure it as a console exclusive for its then-unreleased Xbox Series X and S systems.

Ninja Theory gained quite a following when they delivered Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice back in 2017. The game was set up as an action-adventure game where players followed a female Pict warrior named Senua. Dealing with psychosis, Senua is forced to endure a harsh world filled with horrors to fight back and puzzles to solve. That initial game captivated audiences worldwide; fortunately, we’re not done with Senua quite yet. If you enjoyed that first game, you know a sequel has been in the works. Unveiled back in 2019, Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II has been in development. Of course, the big change since the first installment is that Microsoft has picked up Ninja Theory.
