A number of people would have been disappointed to learn that Epic changed its mind about offering the retro Fallout games for free via its store. However, some good news is on the horizon, as the company will launch them as part of its storefront giveaways. Just not yet.
According to a recent report from IGN, Epic has been in touch with the publication to say the classic Fallout releases will be up for grabs “later this year.” A spokesperson confirmed that the first two games plus Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel will be included.
The original plan was to have all three available on Epic Games Store between February 22 and February 29. However, it was quietly pulled, being replaced by Super Meat Boy.
It’s a bit of a shame we don’t exactly know when they’ll be available for free. All we know is that it’ll be sometime this year. At least it’s happening at all, given that fans had the rug pulled out from underneath them recently.
There’s a good chance a lot of people reading this have only experienced Fallout 3 and beyond. When Bethesda took over the franchise for the 2008 installment, the series went from having more of a cult status on PC to being a mainstream, AAA release.
As and when the older games do become free on Epic Games Store, I would urge you to try them out. They’re a different beast to the Bethesda entries, but it will give you a greater appreciation of just what Fallout used to be like.
