A notable Sega leaker has stated that the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise is getting a spin-off game that is allegedly similar to Mediatonic's Fall Guys. The Sonic the Hedgehog franchise had an excellent 2023, between the release of Sonic Superstars, Sonic Frontiers' post-launch updates, and the launch of the Apple Arcade exclusive title, Sonic Dream Team. Expectations for Sonic's 2024 are set pretty high as well, with the premiere of various TV shows and the third theatrical live-action film. On top of Sonic's multimedia efforts, a new spin-off game could also be coming out this year too.
This information comes from MbKKssTBhz5, or Midori, who has been an accurate leaker regarding the Persona games, with its developer, Atlus, being a Sega subsidiary. Accurate leaks she previously covered include giving fans information about Persona 3 Reload and Persona 5 Tactica before their official reveals. Midori's latest claim is regarding Sega's flagship franchise, stating that there is a Sonic spin-off in the works that could be coming out this year and is supposedly modeled after Fall Guys.
Posted on Midori's Twitter account, she claims that this new Sonic spin-off will be released for iOS and Android mobile devices, with it having gameplay elements similar to Fall Guys. This spin-off will unlikely play exactly like Mediatonic's title and instead will possibly feature elements of a battle royale game, requiring the player to be the last one remaining, as well as needing to stay on a stage or navigate an obstacle course, just like in Fall Guys. This premise would fit the franchise's speed-based platforming roots.
In a follow-up tweet from Andres Lopez from GoNintendo, who spoke directly with Midori, this will be a free-to-play game, with a summer release date allegedly set in place. The game's developer is also confirmed to not be Sega Hardlight, who previously worked on mobile games for the franchise, like Sonic Dream Team, Sonic Forces: Speed Battle, and Sonic Dash. With it pegged for a summer release, this likely means fans will hear about this Sonic the Hedgehog spin-off during an upcoming Sonic Central, as these events usually are broadcast in June.
This leak has a bit of merit behind it, as Sega has expressed interest in expanding its IPs in the mobile gaming market after acquiring Angry Birds developer Rovio. In December, Sega highlighted that several Sonic the Hedgehog mobile titles were being worked on in collaboration with Rovio, making some theorize that Rovio would likely be the developer behind this rumored spin-off. This is all still speculation though, so fans should take this leak with a grain of salt and keep their expectations in check until Sega gives more official information regarding this
